Hi Sleepy, think I found a \"friend\" for my DS. I also have to stop him from attending too many classes. Just managed to convinced him to stop abacus...as I have evaluated and felt that it's a \"good to have\" skill, and not a necessity. There are many other things out there for him to explore...

So glad that his exams are over today!! Let him play wii for the 1st time on weekday. Our house rules do not allow wii on weekdays, but with the exception of yr end exam πŸ˜„

Does not insist that he sleeps early today...he's happily munching away chilli tapioca and reading at the same time now πŸ˜„

haha! Can be best buddy
I agreed abacus is not that essential, there are so many things to learn, better to utilise her time elsewhere. She has progressed sufficiently in my opinion, I feel that it's not necessary to add/subtract a string of hugh enormous numbers

My elder girl finished her exam yesterday too. She reads storybooks & does her self-learning this morning. That's her idea of relaxation

Hi. I am new to this website kiasuparents.com.

Chance upon it when I am googling for GEP information.
Your son went for 2nd round of screening? I heard result should by out by next week. Look out for the yellow envelope πŸ˜„

kiasimom:
Prior to that, I have private tutors for my children but as the children grow older, I realised that it is not just the academic results I am looking at. I need to be involved in their upbringing and character building which I think no one will be a better person to do that other than myself.
I read in Kumon thread that both your kids are attending. Yours attempting which level now?

My elder girl used to attend Kumon too, withdrawn at K2. Now I'm coaching her, she's not attending tuitions
Hi kiasimom,

I'll like to teach my kids myself too πŸ˜„ But really difficult to teach two young kids at the same time 😞 I'm concern that my K1 is too shy, might need to send her for some enrichments for more interactions with other kids.
Hi. You can teach your two children at different times so that you can spend enough time with each of them.

As for your K1 kid, it will be good to send her to enrichment classes that doesn't require her to spend long hours there as kid her age cannot commit to long hours of concentration.

If she is already attending kindergarten, the time spent there should be enough for her to interact with her classmates.

Do not worry too much as kids will grow on their own pace πŸ™‚

Hi.
My boy is doing level G and my girl is doing level C.
May I know why you withdrawn your girl from Kumon?

Yes, my son went for the 2nd round. I am waiting for the results.
How do you know it is a yellow envelope πŸ˜„

I feel that Kumon Maths is not quite in sync with MOE's model drawing & heuristic type of questions. In my opinion, seem more suitable for preschoolers, to build a strong foundation in addition & subtraction.

She progressed sufficiently to handle primary school Maths so we decided to let her spend time on her favourite activity, reading, instead of struggling with daily worksheets.

Oic.
My son is very interested in doing Kumon as it exceeds what he is doing in school and he gets great satisfaction from being able to achieve his ASHR goal.

He told me perserverance is the key to completing his worksheet.

There are times when he found the worksheets too difficult but with guidance from his instructor, he is able to progress.

Of course, this applies differently to other people.

As long as you are comfortable in your child's progress, Kumon is optional πŸ™‚

Your kids willing to do worksheets without prompting? Any other enrichments besides Kumon?

Mine super 'nua' when comes to doing worksheets. On one hand, I want to leave it to her own pace, don't pressure her. On the other hand, if really at her own pace, one week she would probably complete only 5 pages, the outstanding worksheets get piled up in lightning speed! I told teacher to assign 3-5 pages a day only, 10 pages a day is mission impossible for her

She reached level F which I feel is sufficient for primary school. The next level is algebra. Hubby prefers her to master the model method before introducing algebra. For me, it doesn't matter which method come first as long as I don't have to nag nag nag, chase after her to complete worksheets. It's more of a relief for me than her πŸ˜‰

Yes, it has become a daily habit for them to do their worksheets.

Just that sometimes, I will ask them if they have completed their Kumon worksheets.

No, they do not have other enrichment classes besides Kumon.

They are busy enough with their schoolwork and revision and I want them to have some relax time πŸ™‚

YES I agree, time to do other things that kids themselves
enjoy is more important.
My girl has her favourite Ballet to look forward
to every Sat. Also attending Berries Chinese and The Writer's Place (going back to ICanRead next year). That's it.
Other times she loved reading and listening to stories
(I do storytelling almost everyday) and outdoors... walk,
playground, market, library (we do this even on weekdays
before her afternoon school).

Just completed her inline skating lessons. Promised to let her practice
on her own after exams end of this week.

As for Math, teaching her myself for now...

What do you do with your children during free time?
