All About Choosing and Buying Violins

Hi,
Thistlesound, airex - I have a 6 year old daughter who is currently in Yamaha's Music For Children program. She is bored as it is sluggish and is only asked to play short notes 2x each class. She says she likes music and would like to pursue the violin.
We live around Bishan's J8 and am wondering if anyone has good recommendations of a private home tutor.
Thank you and best regards.
I can understand your girl's boredom. Recently I have started teaching 2 new students who were from different music schools and they faced the same problem as your daughter, being bored with the progress in schools. In fact, one of them was playing one song for an entire year..
Anyway by 6, she can start on formal training on a chosen instrument. It is good that she express her spontaneous interest in music.

I have just make enquires with Ossia Music School. Their teaching method is 1:1. I not sure whether my 4yrs old son really keen on learning. I suggest to get 1 second-handed violin to start off 1st. Cos i heard from another parent saying the the violin got to change quite often.
It's true that violin sizes have to be changed according to the rate of growth of the child. From my experience with my students, it's abt once a year. But i do have students changing after abt 7 months. You can get a second hand first to check if your child is genuinely interested with learning violin. If he is, you can get him a new violin when he change sizes as a reward.
For any queries, pls feel free to email me at [email protected] -
I'm selling a 1/16 violin. Please see:

Hi mrswongtuition,
Can I have his contact no? Thanks.

My sister's violin teacher (since she was 3yo, she's now 16) lives near GY Sec. He teaches from his home. He was in the SSO and has been teaching for many years. He also has a children's orchestra in his church which provides opportunities for children to perform (even if you are non-christian, you are welcome). He also has year end concerts for his students to perform.
I can pass you his contact if you are keen. -

Hello watmekiasu. My school has students learning violin as young as 3 years old. For 3 years old, they will use a smaller violin like 1/16 size. It always depend on the child's interest and attention span. It also depends on how the teacher sustains their interest as well as their parents encouragement and being part of their learning progress.
hi which schools take in 3 year olds for violin? is it the suzuki method? thanks, , my DS has expressed interest in the violin. -
I think violin strings might be painful for a kid of this young age, likewise instrument like guitar as my child has tried on both before and lost interest in stringed instruments ever since. I dont know which schs are good but my advice is get a really patient teacher because how your child react in the first lesson will determine his future in that instrument learning…
good luck! -
Hi,
My girl (P4) has just decided to join the school’s CCA violin - beginner. Planning to get a basic student size 3/4 for her to start with. Since we don’t have any private teacher to ask, will be getting the ‘school violin teacher’ to help us get one. (I think the teacher is an outsourced vendor as he sells & trade-in violin too)
The teacher has given me 2 brands to choose from - Prillante & Eurostring. Personally I seem to see a lot mentioning Synwin too. I really have no idea what is the diff, all china-made is all I know. Any recommendation from the experienced mommies here? Hope to hear from you soon…as I need to get one by this Fri. Thanks.
