Parents, not enrichment centres, are key to result

The CA1 next month may be the first heart attack....don't know if many parents/kids will face it, but myself and several friends did. The dip in P3 was a little scary but nothing compared to p5. -

What worst than P5 was what a school did to their P6 prelim. The paper was a killer that it affected the overall score of the students. Most of them cried and the Principal 'consoled' them by stating that he expected the students to move on to the affiliated school so he saw no effect on them whatsoever. :stompfeet: What if the student didn't wish to go to the affiliated school? :faint:

Dump MOE school and go for international school. MOE school plus tuition $, plus enrichment $ = to international school fee. International school is more relax and produces more foreign talents. MOE school has to depend on tuition centre to produce exam smart but talent void kids.
MOE should seriously engaged so-called top tuition centres like LL, etc. to give MOE teachers tuition or to teach their teachers how to teach. By the way those teachers who eventually attend this tuition cum training should have distinction in PSLE, O and A levels for their respective subject. And preferably the top 10% student of NIE. This is to ensure the continuity of producing singapore-made-exam-smart-only children. -

This is something I totally agree...MOE teachers are not trained to teach subjects they are doing in school. They should be going for upgrading courses to teach kids how to handle the tough exam papers set.
It's not just 1 or 2 schools which set WAKE-UP exam papers but generally most schools do that. -

I agree. We just see the overall fees for international schools. If we add top tuition/enrichment centres fees + ASSESSMENT books, it will definitely exceed the fees of international school.

I can’t speak for all parents…but I know P5 has been a terrible year for myself…during CNY, I was talking to my SIL…like most of us, she has no idea what models are…we were brought up using the algebra method. Sure, we can solve a question using algebra but how to explain to the child when schools want them to learn models. The govt shouldn’t just be offering good schools in all parts of Singapore but teachers who can really teach…and not make us parents outsource to tutors.

There are excellent teachers in MOE but none who can teach EVERY subject well. Gone are the days when the primary school exams are of a difficulty one associates with children... and thus well within the reach of every educated adult.
Today's syllabus requires specialized Teachers. Yet, primary school Teachers must teach EMS.
Every system has sub-units (i.e., schools) and whole units (i.e., MOE in its entirety, which includes schools). It is wrong to assume that if every sub-unit is working at maximum performance levels, the whole unit will definitely perform. The organisation is an entity that requires balance and equilibrium between all the sub-units. The fellow that has an overview of all sub-units and the whole unit should be on the lookout for system disequilibria... and continually tweak and fine-tune. When you change one part of the system, you can't leave the rest of the system untouched.
They have changed the syllabus, and pushed it to levels where to teach well Teachers need to specialize. But they forgot to tweak the policy to allow Teachers to subject specialize. I am not surprised Teachers leave. It's not just for the money. There is simply no joy when you know you're teaching one subject well and the other 2 subjects poorly.
They have changed the exams, and made them vastly more difficult (requiring highly complex thinking skills). But they forgot to change the textbooks to include this material. I am not surprised Teachers leave. They've to write their own materials on top of prepare class and mark exams.
The system is in terrible imbalance. Why is no one watching whole unit optimisation against sub-unit optimisation? Whenever things go wrong, fingers point at the Principal... or the Teachers. Hey... take JOINT reponsibility, MOE! Support your Teachers. Support your Principals. Discipline them if necessary but SUPPORT them too!! It is everybody's problem, NOT just the Principals or the Teachers.
Support Teachers with better textbooks. Help the Teachers by allowing subject specialization.
