It is actually a template with diferent sizes of rectangular \"holes\". Along the length of each rectangular \"holes\" there are markings to help the kid to divide the box into different number of equal parts.

I feel that to help our kids do well in Maths, we have to let them learn how to solve these mind twisting questions. Some of the PSLE Maths questions even we as parents can’t solve them. I feel that schools are not doing enough in this area.


While we can share our workings and solutions here, but when come to explaining to our kids they may not understand or take a while to absorb. I’m not sure this is the right approach. But I still think there should be a proper method in teaching our kids to solve model questions.

Is there anyone here watch the Friday night 10.30pm Ch8 show about the P6 student saying how tough the PSLE Maths paper.

The thing that interest me was when they asked the HCI and NYGH students to solve the "Ken Jim chocolate sweet" question, one of the NYGH said she already know how to answer this type of question when she was P5 and she learnt it at an enrichment class. So I really wonder which enrichment class teaches this. Is it Learning Lab, Dr Peh or etc… can do the job?

NYGH is well known for setting very tough math papers in the past though I don't know if it is still the case now. Their students barely pass their own math papers in school but will get A in PSLE. (In 2007, most students were complaining that the PSLE math paper was a killer. However, a few of my friends with their girls in NY told me that their children find the paper was normal - OK)

So the school's own math curriculum will be challenging enough to enable their students to solve question like the sweet and chocolate easily. However, the setback of having such tough papers is that many students are demoralised and developed a dislike for math.

a few questions for discussion, not too difficult


1)A bag contains some yellow and green balls. If we remove 1 yellow ball, the ratio of the number of the remaining yellow balls to the number of green balls is 1:6.If we remove 2 green balls instead of 1 yellow ball, the ratio of the number of yellow balls to the number of green balls is 1:4.How many balls are there in the bag at first?

2)Jim and Ron are to sell some donation tickets.If Jim sells 80 tickets a day and Ron sells 64 tickets a day, Jim will have 12 tickets left when Ron has sold all his tickets. If Jim sells 60 tickets a day and Ron sells 72 tickets a day, Jim will have 312 tickets left when Ron has sold all his tickets.How much more will Jim collect than Ron when both have sold all their tickets at $24 per ticket?

3)Kim bought game cards at $4 each and sold at $9 each. Each customer either bought 1 or 2 game cards.180 customers bought 2 game cards.For every 2 game cards bought,1 game card was given away free.Kim earned $1340. How many customers bought 1 game card?

These 2 questions constitute 5 marks each (out of 100 marks). There are about 4 - 5 such questions. And others are 4 and 3 mark. Total for this section is 50 marks, ie. 50%.


You are right, some questions are not solvable by algebra, model may be easier !

Personally, I feel that algebra is easier, as after the PSLE exam, I sat down, find the questions on the internet and tried to use algebra to solve then (I learned it only after the exam) and bingo, I got all of them.

Did the question said that it is the radii of an arc ?
