NUS High School of Mathematics and Science (Diploma)

Hi"Kamom",
Is Toh Chin Leong still around?
Are you taking PSLE in SH?
The test is not text-book things.1st round is quite simple for
those with OM. 2nd round camp is tougher.
Has nothing much to do with what you had studied in school.
Unless your child is OM, creative or spontaneous reaction,
he would be able to handle very well.
You should check with the school on formal procedure & arrangement,
since you are coming back from overseas school.
You may not be the only one. There are quite a number of similiar
cases going to NUSH. -
may i clarify abbrievation for SH, OM ?
is it Shanghai, Olympiad Maths ? -
Hi "phtthp",
YES. -
kamom:
Hi, DD read through lower secondary science textbooks prior to the test, and did some Math Olympiad workbooks. She was also part of the E2K science program in her primary school, so i guess that helped as she is already used to the concept of coming up with her own experiments to test scientific concepts.THANKS have read thru them but seems like we are the only overseas Singaporean returning to do the DSA.
DS currently in SH, studying in the SG Int'l school.
Top in Science for two consecutive years, Math in the A - A* range
Top in English last yr.
HCL in the C - B range
Student Councillor
Doing his P6 this year....
No competitive sports
Ferocious reader
A great kid :rahrah:
Hope that helps.
One month+ into the school term, it has been good so far. She enjoys school and does her work independently (used to have to push her to finish her work in primary school). Some of the science stuff she is doing is pretty challenging. Her primary school teacher was pleasantly surprised when she told them she doesn't read under her desk or fall asleep in class anymore.
The environment is also not as competitive as in top schools, and most kids get a chance to be in the CCA of their choice.
I think if you are looking for an environment that is academically challenging but not fiercely competitive, NUSH may be a choice to consider. -
tiggermum:
:thankyou: ds will really love this kind of environment. Thanks for the tips. Will try my best to get some books for him. Resources are really limited here.

DS1 also participated in E2K programme & various Maths Olympiad competitions such as NMOS, SPSO, SMOPS & AMOPS, UNSW. I guess NUSHS recognises these awards as a number of them are organised by themselves so they roughly know the standards of the students applying before they give them CO prior to their PSLE results. So if your DS has these, please remember to submit when they ask for his past achievements. As for the Camp, they will group the kids together to do some experiments or task to look for qualities such as problem solving abilities, passion & motivation, independence, creativity, communication & teamwork.

A month has passed & so far, DS1 is happy with his school, especially those enrichment modules that he has taken up such as Chemical Potpourri & Robotics which are not offered in his primary school. He enjoys Maths Olympiad too. The school allows students to work their way through according to their own pace. DS1 has known someone that has accerelated to year 5 for Maths upon his entry to school (DS1 always called him Maths Genius) & now to year 6, all ready to take on NUS module next year when he is in year 3. Although DS1 has keen interests in the subject but he prefers to take it a step by a step and I'm fine as long as he is motivated & enjoys learning. Hope this helps in knowing the school better. -
Hi"Kamom",
CL Toh told me abt iPSLE in 2007-08.Remembered he said the
top students pool scored between 250-256, while our ds were studying
in SH…but I did not buy this iPSLE idea somehow…
I have no idea now.Do you have update?
You have to decide whether you want to aim for PSLE-S1 posting or
spend time trying via DSA.
What "dagong99" & "tiggermum" said were true of what is
happening after 1.5month in Yr 1.
But the competitiveness is "invisible", maybe you’d feel that in Yr5-6.
The professeur de français and his lesson is very interesting and fun. -

Does GEP students have an advantage of getting into the Einstein Club ? DS1 had seen DS2 P6 seniors from Einstein Club joining him in his Enrichment Modules. Thinking of getting DS2 to join ....Hi \"KiasuMummy\",
What is your ds/dd Mentor Group?
How did your ds/dd get into NUSH, via DSA or S1 posting?what is his/her PSLE score?
What is his/her CCA?
what is his/her Enrichment module programs?
Is he/she member of Einstein+ now?
Is he/she doing Basic or Advanced Olympiad Math Module?
What is his/her 3rd Language?doing at MOELC or NUSH campus? -
I remembered the NMOS & Science winners will be invited into Einstein Club,
and enjoy the modules during their Pri 6.That has nothing related to whether
you are GEP or not…etc…
