      :?: :? :?: :?

      Hi

In answering these questions, it may useful to get your child to read the chapter on Factors in the school textbook.

      Q1) The answer is 9 (1,3,9).

Patrick had thrice as many marbles as Joe.

Patrick gave away 15 marbles and Joe gave away 3 marbles.
Then they had an unequal number of marbles.
How many marbles did Patrick have at first?

              Hi

additional information for Q1. All numbers have even number of factors except square numbers. So, if we are looking for odd number of factors, we can narrow the search to square numbers only ie 1x1, 3x3, 5x5,7x7 etc.

              cheers.

                Hi

If unequal is replaced by equal, then the answer is Patrick had 18 marbles at first.

                      Hi chloecube!

                      first Partic had 3u
                      joe had 1u
                      from the model,2u+3=15…u=6
                      so 3u=18

                        Hi

Please do not spend too much thinking about maths, especially today.

                        1) Draw 3 boxes to show Patrick’s marbles.

                        2) Draw 1 box to show Joe’s marbles.

                        3) From the end of the third box, move 15 (shown by a line with arrows on both sides) to cut a vertical line down (1) and (2).

                        4) From (2) draw a line to show 3 marbles to touch vertical line drawn in (3)

                        5) Now, you’ll see 2 units ------ 12 or 1 unit ------ 6

                        6) Patrick had 3 units or 18 marbles.

Please let me know if you need me to draw the MD.

                        Best wishes
