Pri 1 boy punched in belly by bullies

THIS seven-year-old has probably had the worst introduction to school in Singapore this year.

It has been only six weeks but he's already been bullied on no less than three occasions.

First, the Primary 1 pupil was dragged out of the canteen by four older schoolmates, taken to a corner of the school field and punched in the stomach by two of them last Thursday. His assailants are Pri 2 pupils just a year older than him.

Then, on Monday, Kenny (not his real name) fell after he was tripped by a classmate and bruised the side of his face.

On Wednesday, he went home with part of his fringe snipped off.

By Wednesday night, his parents decided that they had had enough.

They made a police report the next day about the bullying incidents and saw the principal of Concord Primary in Choa Chu Kang for the third time in two weeks.

The father, Mr Peh Kok Keong, 32, said: \"The incidents have been happening once too often and despite our complaints, nothing seems to be done.\"

Complained of stomachache

Mr Peh, who works part-time, said he first noticed something was wrong last Thursday, when Kenny came home complaining of a stomachache.

He had asked his twin brother to piggy-back him because of the discomfort.

But when Mr Peh asked him what happened, he refused to say.

It was only later that night that the story was coaxed out of Kenny after his father asked if he had been bullied.

He said that during recess that day, he was dragged off by four schoolmates to the side of the school field for no apparent reason.

There, out of view of the school's CCTV cameras, two boys held him as two others took turns to rain more than 10 blows on his stomach.

Kenny said: \"They also pulled my uniform and pushed me around.\"

Mr Peh said that after recess, his son tried to tell his Chinese language teacher about the incident, but she simply dismissed it.

The next day, Mr Peh took leave and told the principal about the bullying.

In response to The New Paper's queries yesterday, the principal, Mrs Tonnine Chua, said that she does not condone acts of bullying by her pupils.

\"The boys involved have been disciplined and counselled. They have apologised to the student in question,\" she said.

But Mr Peh said he wasn't entirely happy that there was no apology by the bullies' parents or the school.

\"But since the principal told me to let it go, I decided to leave it,\" he said.

Counsellors and psychologists say bullying incidents have both short and long-term impact on the victims.


Second incident

So when Mr Peh was alerted to a second incident just a few days later on Monday, he was alarmed.

This incident took place during his son's Chinese lesson period.

Kenny said his female classmate deliberately placed a pencil in his way, causing him to trip and fall.

He sustained a bruise on his right cheek. This classmate also punched his son repeatedly in the back, said Mr Peh.

When asked why his son gets picked on, Mr Peh said it could be because of his small build.

\"He could also just be in the wrong place at the wrong time,\" he said.

Kenny informed the Chinese language teacher, but again nothing was done.

\"Why didn't the teacher do anything, when there was such a visible bruise?\" said Mr Peh. When TNP visited the family on Thursday, Kenny's bruise was still evident.

Just two days earlier on Tuesday, an angry Mr Peh took leave again to see the principal.

He wanted to \"give feedback\" to the school on the the Chinese language teacher's lack of action.

Mrs Chua told TNP that she has spoken to the teacher and given her guidance on how she could have managed the situation better.

She added: \"When the incidents were brought to the attention of this teacher, she conducted a visual inspection of the student to verify that he did not suffer any pain or injury before proceeding with the lesson.\"


Third incident

Then came the third incident on Wednesday.

For Mr Peh, this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

He had picked his son up from school in the evening and noticed a portion of his fringe had been cut off.

When he asked Kenny about it, he said his boy kept silent initially as he has a \"shy and quiet\" personality.

\"I asked my son if he had cut his own hair. He said no and said someone else did it,\" he said.

Mr Peh and his wife met the principal for the third time on Thursday.

The principal said the Chinese language teacher had been alerted to hair on the floor during her lesson and had noticed something wrong with Kenny's fringe.

But she neither raised this to the boy's form teacher nor his parents.

The Pehs are unhappy about this.

Mrs Peh, 30, said: \"Why weren't we notified? Why is it that each time, we are the ones who notice something happening and have to ask the school about it?\"

Mr Peh added: \"The school has not been doing its part to prevent recurrent incidents in spite of our complaints.\"

Mrs Chua said that she and the school counsellor have counselled Kenny and will continue to monitor his emotional well-being.

\"The safety and well-being of our students are of paramount concern to us. The school will use the incident to create greater awareness among staff on school bullying, and to put in place a system where reports of bullying are quickly addressed and incidents dealt with appropriately,\" she said.

For Mr Peh, he hopes his son can be educated in a safe environment and that teachers would be alert to his needs.

\"I don't want to worry every day that he's being bullied in school,\" he said.

Both Principal & Teachers are lacking in disciplining skills. :mad: There is no reason / excuse for the teacher to dismiss the issues without informing the parent.

STOP this poor P1 boy suffering at the hands of school bullies.

start P1 school Term 1, the poor boy subjected to this type of horrible trauma.
no wonder he so scared of going to school, traumatized!

and what are the parents of these P2 bullies doing ?
instead of helping yr child focus and concentrate in P2 studies, why let yr child go and bully other P1 kid ? for what ? aren't you supposed to do your dutiful parental role, guide and teach yr child that bullying other people's kid is wrong ?
