The Alternative Story (TAS) - Discussion

English language has so many aspects to be covered… s’times i am at a loss how to help my DS esp composition which involves everything fr vocab, grammar, sentence structure to imagination, ideas etc etc… it is unlike Maths which is more straightforward…
Anyway I do like the fact that they have an extra teacher who can help to take care of the class, in case any of the students could not catch up / need extra help. -

DS has grammar cloze and vocab cloze exercise sheets from time to time. The one thing they do rarely is punctuation. There was some coverage last year, probably this went away as he has gone on to higher level this year.try:
Quite surprised that TAS have time to cover so many aspects in just one lesson a week.
TAS does not cover Cloze Passages. -
And yes, that they try to cover so much in each lesson is true. At times I heard complaints that things are not marked as thoroughly as parents would have liked. I tried to start looking through his marked work but have been falling by the wayside. Gotta pull my own socks also.

Joined TAS not too longer, must say am impressed with their coverage of topics and also with the fact that my kid took to loving classes and writing and compre after a few lessons. Have not tried many other centres but so far TAS does seem good. And their teachers seem young, was a bit concerned by that at first but after seeing the teacher explain to me some of the learning, my fears were put to rest. Being young may not be a bad thing.

I think your children must have a good foundation in reading. I don’t think those with no good reading foundation will be able to absorb so many aspects of English in a weekly lesson. And they include compo too?
If that’s the case, MOE should really learn from this TAS. If TAS can do so in a 1.5?/2h? per week, why is MOE using 5h a week and not delivering? -
Yes, perhaps the reading foundation must be good. But it’s true that MOE teachers sometimes do not know how to teach the aspects of English, not so much them but maybe its also the system. I think they are generalists, they know a bit of every subject but not in depth knowledge so they deliver in a general way and that is why our kids need tuition.

Hi!
Can i check if any one of you send your DD/DS to any English class before he/she starts P1, which you thk have helped in his/her primary school preparation?
Just wanted to hear some recommendations fr the parents here.
I thk :offtopic: here... Kindly pm me, thanks! :rahrah: -
Hi ilovechubby,
I sent both my kids to icreativelearner before P1. 'twas good and I have no hesistation to do the same if clock was reversed. They started icl only knowing how to read the alphabets. Through icl, they learnt to write and also to read. Of course home preparation and their regular kindy also played a part. But since I enrolled them in a so so kindy, I felt the additional help was required.
