once he leaves the party, he is no longer the MP of hougang
and a by election has to be called

u r correct on d 1st part.
But a by election need not necessarily be called once an MP leaves his seat for whatever reasons during his term.

If my recollection is correct, after JBJ lost his Anson seat in 1986
after being made a bankrupt fr defamation suits,
a byelection was not called.

Anson was simply covered by MIW advisor n grassroots n subsequently absorbed into TP GRC.
Fortunately HG can be covered by AL GRC team.

Would MIW seize dis opportunity to give their man (Desmond Choo?) more prominence
n gain more ground by not calling a byelection?
I think it wld raise a stink.

Other instances off-hand when no by elections were called.
MIW MP in Jalan Besar GRC - court case; MIW MP in West Coast GRC - died.

but considering the present day political climate, they will lose another GRC if they don't call for by-election

the present parliament is too new to hold till end of the term without a by-election, it will stand up as a sore thumb in parliament with empty seat for Hougang, and PAP will be accused of kiasu kiasi .....

and for good accountability surely PM Lee will call for by-election. Question is : will Desmond Choo win ? or PAP will send someone else ? seems unlikely to send any one other than Desmond - for fear of being labelled kaisu? :rotflmao:
