When I was first introduced to KPS, I was expecting the kiasu, kiasi type of site...but you guys proved me so very wrong!
:thankyou:
THANK YOU SO MUCH :lovesite: -
Very grateful to all mamas' sharing, it really helps! :lovesite:
Kamom and myself are in almost simliar situation...having restriction in entering competition since we are both in Shanghai. However, I will try to check with my LOA school if they can register for us. Even so, hmm, flying back for the test can be expensive :moneyflies:
Shanghai Singapore Int'l School is a test center for APMOP, but I am not sure about the NMOS test, I will check. -
Song22:
Taking the APMOP should be good enough as you're overseas. No need to fly back all the way for NMOS. What's more important is how you perform during the selection tests. If you don't clear that you won't get to go to the camp.Very grateful to all mamas' sharing, it really helps! :lovesite:

kamom:
Hi kamom, DD was not in NMOS, did not win anything for SMOPS either, so there's still a good chance, but like what other parents shared, good to have exposure to Math Olympiad type of questions.Any kids in NUSH without participating in the NMOS?
According to the website, can only register thru school NOT as individual. So many things RS kids are being left out.
Also, not all in NUSH sleep, eat and breathe Science and Maths. They may have a greater interest in the two subjects compared to languages, that's all. Some have a wide range of interests and are not really science-mad. -
jtoh:
Thanks for your advise jtoh

For OM,
APMOS (Asia-Pacific) is the toughest. If you can do well
at Invitational Round(say get top 20), you may not be invited
for FINAL ROUND at HCI, UNLESS you get into very top…
There are just some locals (exclude foreign students no.)
entering FINAL ROUND, but mainly students from China,
HK, Japan, India, SEA…etc…are far better.
They are OM focused and got that kind of training & competitive
environment, and high profile OM trainers…and good pool of talents in OM…
My ds got 3rd in 2009(in SH), and 12th in 2011(SG)(Invitational round).
He got Gold(NMOS) and Platinum(SMOPS), and Honour(AMC),
Math-Hi Dist(UNSW),SMO(1st Rd).ds still not that good, but can
just outdo here…this is reality…while maintaining the OM standard,
he is turning to other areas like Physics, Robotics, Chemistry, French,
Design, Thinking, Literature, Leadership…to be lesser extreme towards OM…
I advise:take the less tougher (but not easy)routes like NMOS,SMOPS, UNSW(Math), ACS-OM, to get your recognition here for your DSA & personal fulfillment…etc.AMC8 is also good, but the test date is in Nov…, unless you are taking DSA next yr2013. -
Hi parents/students out there! I'm currently in sec2, and im planning to take the sec3 enterance test. Info about NUSH such as year 3 school hours, workload, etc would be appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks for sharing. Wow, your ds' profile is so strong, I understand it is not easy to get SMOPS platinum. Where did your DS has his OM training, Singapore or Shanghai? Did he attend the Shanghai local OM school?
Yes, my ds' PSLE / DSA year is 2013. -
Hi "Song22",
My ds started OM in Pri 1(SH).
Later selected by SH special OM trainers and continue thru till Pr5.
Then went back every summer & winter vacations for training.
Singapore have very very tiny numbers of good OM trainers maybe good
for beginners, but (we interviewed)do not have very "right-fit" OM trainers to accelerate him.His SG school is not so OM focus either.
In conjunction with this OM, he has been learning, practicising int’l chess,
and taking part in some competitions in SH, SG, London, and you are trained to play with your mind imagining your moves on the chess board…
In 2010, he met former world champion-Garry Kasparov whom inspired him how "life imitates chess"… -
Very impressive indeed!
