in the past, no need to clock.

now they more strict, don't want \"sleeping\" members, want active Hokkien clan members to sweat and contribute 40 to 60 hrs, just like PV in schools. 😓

ya loh now everyone knows that better sign up to be the clan members earlier and in case cannot get PV in school, can fall back on the clans. So many people want to join the clan so they have choices now. Just look at the list of people fighting to be the volunteers will let you know that you can be sleeping members but dun expect high hope of getting recommendation letters. Now some mummies even go one step further as in getting referral from comittee members in order to secure the recommendation letter

how frequent are these clan activities held ? held every month ?

if insufficient activities to go round so many people, how to clock 40 hrs, if everyone fighting to volunteer for the same activity ? won’t be easy.

I think i mention before in the thread that SHHK will send out email to all members of the upcoming activities or big events.once you see that make sure u standby and check email every day after see the email cos they will send out another emails to members who wants to be volunteer to request for volunteers. you have to try to reply back fast. Activities that they need volunteers are like chinese new year, ma zhu dan, kong zi dan, hokkien food festivals, family days etc. how frequent depends on the events like i think there will be one coming up which is the ma zhu dan around apr or may, then kong zi dan around aug , sept

besides just getting the letter for phase 2B P1 registration and getting 10% discount to join SHHK activities, what are other advantages of becoming a member of SHHK ?

I don’t think shhk has any baseline that members have to contribute. There are some who do hundreds of hours becos they enjoy, and there are others who are ‘sleeping’ but still get letter.

For benefits, there are networking opportunities if one should join their activities. Also, there are other cultural things one gets to learn like confucius birthday etc. It’s not just about that precious letter. Btw, the discount is off the classes shhk act organizes; not activities.

                      Hi,
There is no baseline that members have to contribute. whether you get the precious letter or not, it will depend on the number of applications for that school at phrase 2b. For the registration at 2010 for P1 at 2011, you can be a member for a few months and not doing anything, you will get the letter (learnt from my hokkien clan frens), last year registration, need to be members for >3 years + volunteer hours then will have letters cos one hokkien mummy told me she never did volunteer and she has membership of coming to 4 years, she is the only one among us who did not get the letter from the clan.

I think since the mummies are willing to pay such high entrance fees and going through the trouble to get references to sign application letters, y try ur luck and risk not getting the letter by not doing the volunteer. You are just one step going to get into phrase 2b,you might as well dun join as you have to consider the population around nan chiau is increasing and everyone is going by the clan way if not pv through school.Nowadays the clan members have memberships as long as 3 years or more cos they are more well informed and they joined very early.

Benefits are they have different activities coming up like going for farm tour, food tasting, paper cutting , soap making, balloon scruplturing which are some of the activities i brought my girl to join. Have to pay loh but very interesting activities and these do not count towards volunteer hours.

events that count towards volunteer are those major events and i must admit that by volunteering you get to understand more of these cultures , what are the things involve to get things going, making frens with mummies and the staff of SHHK and advice from nice mummies who have past the stage of registration already.

Ya discount for SHHK lessons like cultural troops, enrichment classes

if want to get 2 referral - don’t approach those mummies who are also registering their child same year, same age as your child. Then, you’ll be competing with her head on clash in phase 2B and maybe even same school during balloting. Of course she won’t be your referral.

perhaps during activities, strike a conversation ask discreetly first, find out referral’s background first - hi, may i know how old is yr child now ? if you happen to meet those whose kids already past P1 registration stage, then they’re more willing to help, bec then they’re not your direct rival competitors for phase 2B.

after a while as you attend more activities, you more or less see familiar faces around, you’ll know whether you can approach this person or not for referral.
