      VooVoo:
Is there a distinct advantage of one-to-one training over group lesson?

Depends on the size of the group and how close their ability is.

If group size is not more than 4, then it's ok.

If the other members in their group are about the same ability, this allows the children to practice meaningfully against similar opponents the techniques learnt in the lesson.

Private lessons at your home are also an option and the price often same or lower than powerchess/chess-kidz. However, freelance trainers should be screened carefully, especially those who claim they are chess masters. (furthermore not all chess masters are good teachers) Ask them for their fide ID and go to http://www.fide.com to check their credentials: http://ratings.fide.com/

How about Chinese Chess? Do you know if there are schools that offer lessons or holiday programmes on Chinese Chess?

            (1) No advantage for regular chess players (i.e. not representing Singapore at international level)
            (2) Some grandmasters are good teachers, the advantage is not because he is a grandmaster but because he is a good teacher.
            (3) there is no one size fits all, many top players may start off with one coach but as they get better, they change to a stronger coach.

Thanks for your advice! Do you think a one-to-one training is better for a novice?

Thinking of enrolling my DS(12 yrs) to a chess class. Anyone has any feedback on good chess classes? What about Singapore Chess Federation? Anyone a member of it?

As far as I know, both SCF and Intchess offer structural programs for kids to learn chess. They have difference levels of program to suit different players and can offer assessment to test the level of your child.
You can try one of their group class first and if your child is really interested to develop further then you can consider going for private tuition, and even going for competitions...

Anyone enrolling your child for the upcoming 3rd National Kindergarten Chess Championships? My DS’s instructor encourage him to participate to gain some exposure. How do you prepare your child for the competition?

Hi I'm Kim Steven Yap, an International Chess Master and I worked for Asean Chess Academy, Singapore.

Please enroll your kids to chess training as it not only provides fun but also actually makes kids smarter. Studies shows that chess strengthens a child's ability to visualize, boosts his concentration, improves his memory and sharpens his analysis. It also teaches him to think more creatively.

Chess also improves the over-all academic performance of a child. It has been proven that kids who study and play chess do well in their Math and English subjects than those who don't.

If interested for your child's training please email [email protected] or [email protected] or send me a message 91789863. For rates please call our office 6258 0100. Thank you.

                        Hi,

I have heard that International chess boosts mathematical skills such as basic arithmetic and coordinate system, because they train the child to do clearer calculation in piece exchanges and familiarization of coordinates used in Chess. It also helps them to visualize geometrical problems and manage their time and mental stamina better which helps them to perform better in their exams! All these skills can be acquired with fun for the children.

I strongly recommend parents to take up these courses that are available at Intchess Asia pte. Ltd where my children have learnt from World Chess Federation Certified trainers.
