[Choa Chu Kang] Primary Schools
-
Hi - I am new here and found this forum through someone’s recommendation.
My daughter is 6 this year and going for Pri 1 . We live within 1 km of Yew Tee Primary so always tot will apply that. BUt now realised that even for last year for phase 2C (which we are in) also got to ballot for less than 1km. 138% more applications.
Someone told us if we don get it - govt might post us to a school we are not so keen on.
Another alternative is my step daughter is in Fairfield Methodist Primary and if we want to we can register under Phase 1 which of course gets us in automatically cos sibling (half sisters also counted right?) but Fairfield is so far from us. And many experienced parents advised better to get a school nearby though Fairfield is a good school.
What would you do? Try Phase 1 under Methodist but so far from CCK? Or take a gamble for Yew Tee primary? Appreciate all the advice I can get. Hubby feels we should not take risk and just go for Phase 1 under Methodist, better long distance than in another primary school allocated and possibly not conducive for her? -

We cannot sell our house as its less than 5 years and moving is not an option for us for other personal reasons as well.
Can you actually "monitor?" the registration of applicants as some schools may not entertain your calls and not sure if Yew Tee Primary is good enough to tell you whats the status etc. -

it is a risk you have to take if you want to register Yew Tee regardless if they are kind enough to entertain your call.We cannot sell our house as its less than 5 years and moving is not an option for us for other personal reasons as well.

your consideration would be, will Kranji be an acceptable option for backup or you rather do the travelling to Fairfield. -
Thanks Councillor for your reply. No, Kranji is somewhere I do not want her to go. My husband said the same thing that he rather her travel to Fairfield than go Kranji PS. Sigh... Really ah. I wish the govt can at least let us have a 2nd choice and not just put us in the next available school. But I guess that would mean extra work for them

If your child doesn't get into the school of choice in P2C, you still have P2CS. However, vacancies in almost all the popular schools will have been taken up by P2C, leaving you with limited choices in P2CS. Only if your girl doesn't get a place in any of the schools by P2CS will the government steps in to allocate her to an available school near your house. Even then, you will have a choice - to name schools (those with vacancies) you want your child in or leave it to the government to assign.
Hence, you have choices. Not that you don't have a choice. Fairfield or Yew Tee - this is a choice. Yew Tee or Kranji or other schools in your neighbourhood - that is another choice. -

I think you are facing a problem that majority of the parents faced. What should you do and what you do not want. There are parents who send their kids to schools in Bukit Timah area and further (one even to Bishan) because that's what they want. Some insists on not travelling that distance and make do with their options here. By monitoring Yew Tee in phase 2C which usually last 2 days, you can view in MOE website after Day 1 on first day's registration. The school has been having balloting since 2009 with the numbers of getting in decreasing. There's another school, Bukit Timah Pri that some will send their kids to in 2Csupp; I hear school's quite good. -
I agree. I do have choices and i guess all parents want to make the best choices and not knowing what is ahead of you makes the assessing of choices worse. Or rather which "evil is lesser" (figure of speech) - distance versus a not so reputable school (Kranji PS). And indeed its, which is more important though many experienced parents advise that distance is important in terms of CCA and your kid being exhuasted from travelling from CCK to Fairfield on a daily basis versus walking to Yew Tee PS (one traffic light away).
Bukit Timah Primary? Thank you for the suggestion. I guess I should look at that as well. I also can consider CHIJ - Queen of Peace, as its not too far away from Yew Tee as well. -
I was looking at De La Salle’s website and saw they have PV application for 2012 for Intake 2014. Anyone knows is this the first time they opening up PV? For 2014 intake? I read somewhere on this forum that they don have PV at all and I just saw the application form on their website for it.
