MOE should give P1 registration priority to SG kids?

Alumni/non-alumni is a non issue to me, in fact I feel that this alumni phase is not a problem. The problem is Singaporeans are not given an absolute right/priority in P1 registration at all. IMO, in ALL phases Singaporeans should come first, then the PRs. Foreigners as usual can only reg in phase 3. There should be a clear distinction between a Singaporean and a PR, if there isn’t much difference, who will want to convert their citizenship?

Regarding SG vs PR, I don’t thk we should totally exclude them but if it is an issue, maybe can ‘limit’ the number against the percentage of SG applications? Maybe like limit to 10 or 15% (arbitrary number) of PR students / SG students registered per phase?

I am making an assumption based off the statistics. I.e. those locally born (which could of course include PRs) against those who registered for P1 7 years later. I.e., relatively long stayers. The overage is 5%, which I attribute to new imports, +/- a bit.

I am speaking on the ground that my child was granted a position in the foreign country school. Schools with deep history and are even more elistic than in SGP. How did we get in, in the first place? Based on entry level. Being PR, I need to pay alot high price as compared to the local PR here.


Well....our education policy sucks when comes to PR. As what you mentioned here do we all just buy in and keep quiet? As quote by you \"The world is flat, may as well get used to it.\" Nope. Even though a certain % still think that the world is flat, people will try to prove that the world is round.

So, just to be clear, is this our real life situation now, or are you speaking hypothetically, I'm confused.

Yeah, just wait and see how that goes down. Even if 1 Singaporean lost out to one foreigner in the whole of Singapore, will be headline news.

Actually I am thinking the immediate imports with ready children are generating some of the concerns and typically they are the FTs which I am not sure what is the actual %. Interesting fact about them is, their numbers may be small but their \"threat\" impact seems significant. Apart from P1 registration, they also make an impact in school results ranking. Of course that is merit-based but what I am trying to say is the statistics may appear small but they somehow magnify their presence by their ability to drive results. My school has quite a few outstanding PRC kids.

ksi, we can spend our lives tilting at windmills. How much of all of this is based on data? Come into KSP, suddenly everyone knows of a local who had been displaced by a PRC, some FT who had decamped after 'milking' the system. In all my years working within g'ment and MNC, I have yet to encounter any of such incidences. How much is hearsay?

What is the total foreign participation in the local schools? Who knows, I can only make an educated guess on available data and as far as I can see, its about 5%, or 1.5 students in every class of 30 at P1.

Is that huge? We can't allow 2 students per class to be a foreigner? We must displace every single foreign student from our top schools and place them in the periphery?

Boggles the mind. Some time in the future, our children may wish for an overseas stint to places like New York, London, Toronto, attend Uni at Harvard, MIT, Oxford. Part of the attraction will be the opportunity to meet people from other backgrounds and nationalities. And here we are, its at our doorstep, and we turn it away?

3Boys, actually I agree with you that we should just learn to integrate and perhaps learn something from them on willpower, determination to overcome English to be here. Unfortunately they probably came on too fast and too strong for most people to be able to respond, I think it’s human nature.


We have no firm statistics but gutfeel probably also feel that they are growing in numbers rapidly…hence the discomfort.

You are all going to flame me, but that's ok. I find this foreign aversion to be incredibly narrow minded. We are an open global economy with an open society. How many foreign students are there in our P-schools, really?

Actually, what irks me is not where they are from. It's their attitude and behaviour. They want to stay here, yet instead of integrating into our society, learning and adapting to our cultures here, they bring with them bad habits and expect to be treated as if they own this place. This is the one major point that I can't stand.
