Distance to school is important. Getting into a good school in terms of environment and acedemic wise are equally important. I think most parents are in that mindset.

Agree. Hohoho. Wonder how MOE will marry all these different wants....

MOE's decision have to be based on the assumption that \"all schools are the same\"..

Priority should be given only to alumni who stay within 1km of the school.

you are alumni staying within 1km of school? 🙂

I think so be it then…this in my view is the ‘fairest’ and guilt-free way for all parents, since it means that it’s all the fate of the child…I mean even if the parents deliberately stay close to a highly popular school, it’s still based on random allocation by MOE right? No more the confusion or twisting an arm or leg or breaking the law or looking for loopholes in all the different phases…

This is a radical suggestion and in many ways, I support it. It will 'equalize' schools again... But I think, politically impossible to bring this through! We're not starting from a blank slate! :hi5:

if all schools are the same, then don’t need ranking already
whether he send his son for tutiton or not does not matter to me.What matters is since he says all neighbourhood schools are good too, then he should have just sent his kids or grandson to neighbourhood school since all neighbourhood schools are good.reminds me of the water tank in woodlands where they say clean already no need to change water tank intitally but then those who says that are not living in that block of flat
My view, as someone who didn’t grow up here but now has Singaporean children.

                        - I can see the argument for removing the alumni connection. I would stand to lose if it goes before the 2013 intake but I do think it is one of the things that promotes so-called elitism.

                        - Church/clan affiliation should probably stay as these schools do partially self-fund so they should be able to give some priority to their members

                        - PV should go. We did it for my daughter and were ballotted out. Yes, parents do have to show some commitment to do it which is better than the sleeping alumni but not all parents are able to do it or are given the chance. We were lucky that some friends knew the teacher in charge so she prioritised us and gave us the chance to do a few full days over the year-end holidays which meant we completed 40 hours in less than a week. If we’d had to do recess duty or something we couldn’t have done it as both of us work; no way I could be back at the school for 1 hour every day for 40 days!

                        - One question I have r.e. judging purely by distance. Are there any people who don’t live within 1km or even 2km of any school?

                        - Also, is the government prepared for the impact that a distance-only system would have on the property market. I grew up in the UK where your school used to be purely on distance so one side of the road could be under the catchment area for a great school and the other side for a terrible school meaning that the house prices would be totally different. Now they do allow people to give a choice of 3 schools (I think) then you are allocated to one of them which makes it a bit better but the problem is still there.
