No problem. I have to tweak the usage such that it will keep my child interested. While I execute this, I have to \"setup\" as a classroom with some of the soft toys involved. Then my child thought is a game and play together which indirectly exposure the child with all these addition/subtraction concept.

So all will depend on individual child liking

Practical life no need to purchase from any source. Cheaper to do up a few materials at a time for baby at intervals. You may already have the household items you can use at home. Only thing is try to have a designated color coded tray for every similar activity you're introducing. For example, for 18mths-2.5yrs old... there's a few you can do simultaneously and the progression should ideally be from easy to difficult.

(These activities are great for pincer-grip. Read : Useful for self feeding and future preparation for writing/holding a pencil)

Scooping Exercise
1. Scooping big red beans from one bowl to another
2. Scooping big red beans from one bowl to two bowls

Pegging Exercise
1. Pegging round a tray/low basket with big pegs
2. Pegging round a tray/low basket with small pegs

*pegs can be plastic or wooden*

Sorting Exercise
1. Sorting 3 different coloured pebbles into separate dishes with a tong
2. Sorting 3 different coloured ping pong balls into separate dishes with a soup spoon

For older kids can use tweezers to sort stamps.

Accelerated learning experiences within sensitive periods does not equate to a child learning \"speed-math\" or whatever it is parents term it these days.

Montessori Math prides in concrete foundation, hands-on experiences, working from concrete to abstract meaning children don't just see Math as only numbers but instead they get to work with real concrete materials they can see, feel and understand before proceeding to recording level.

There's no shortcut. Mental math activities are extras that teachers provide on top of the traditional Montessori lessons (not a given and up to individual teachers.. like me. ) There is however accelerated learning, as in there are children who grasp concepts really fast concretely and can move on faster to complete the curriculum and with the gradual heightened frequency working on the sums and materials simultaneously, they gain the mental capacity to calculate faster and more accurately.

Cheating by shortcut just to be ahead or be faster may end up having the child being careless and not gaining the ability to check back their work and the lapse can pose detrimental effects moving forward.

It's not the race to the finish that counts since the learning journey is a continuous marathon. It's the embedded foundation and concrete concept that Montessori advocates. The understanding will come naturally that children have little trouble in understanding and coping with primary school math levels at least up till P2/P3... without much coaching.

It's imperative that parents understand the Montessori Methodology is more than just learning just Math or Phonics or Grammar... but it IS the learning for life that our Montessorian children get. A holistic method of education.

If parents only seek to use the academic portions of the curriculum, a Montessori enrichment programme can be an option for a so called concise version of what our children in daily programmes learn. This doesn't mean that all children can grasp or adapt to the lessons well enough to be steady pom pi pi on their own upon completion as they lack the practice. After all they say only practice makes perfect. So in short to have more retained mentally is precisely via lots of practice. \"What goes thru the hands goes to the mind...\" ~ Maria Montessori.

I'm currently a bit on to something different (on top of the current Montessori sensorial explorations that i'm doing now..) to add-on to my boy's learning capacity as he is active and a very fast learner. Plus i dislike attributing the trait of children being slow learners just cos they are Dec babies. :politebleah:

Can share the tips to encourage mental addition/subtraction and committing simple addition/subtraction facts to memory? My elder twin will religiously use the count up/ down method even for simple single digit sums...the Mei Mei will try to remember simple addition facts(although can get wrong sometimes...)but not for her Jie Jie...will it come eventually?

Btw, your dd oredi attending Kumon isn't it? That should give her the speed
factor in calculation. Via lots and lots of repetitive worksheets and drilling...

One or two Montessori materials can aid practice for the hands-on and recording plus there are a couple of non-Montessori games/materials that can help accelerate mental ability. Will try to share with you, sean wife and the rest.
