All Schools are GOOD Schools

It's especially unfair to boys who are usually late boomers, less mature & dreamer like my dsIt's very sad that kids today need tutors to stay in touch of whats happening in class (well at least know what the teacher is talking). Not all parents can afford tutors and don't forget there are 4 subjects and perhaps 2 kids ?
Not all parents can teach or know how to teach. Science for example is a tricky subject.
So kids today not only have to attend school but also have tutors in the background. Is there still this thing called CHILDHOOD ? PSLE is like a determining factor at a tender age of 11/12.

Agree. Boys mature later than girls.they don't understand why they need to study harder.

Today i asked my son to go to tuition. He said cannot. He doesn't t want to go cos he hates studying all the time.his school tasked me to send tuition :faint: -
Thanks chenon for starting this topic
my school didn’t conduct the science Olympiad exam. Who decide to not to give an opportunity to my kids?cos of these reasons people become kiasu and find a house near by a top school if they can afford to buy.then do Pv then balloting.mad race start here.a good news they want to change the P1 registration.hopefully they will consider all the school has the same system.moe conduct the nation wide exams for science Olympaid and may be t choose or willing kids can participate in the exam. Then they can say all school are good school.
Do i have a rights to ask principal why ur school conduct the science Olympaid exams? May i know why the p didn’t cos of the fund. -

No more such a thing as childhood...we had enjoyed during our days...one assessment book used from Jan to Dec...at least for me. Rode bicycles the moment we finished our homework.
Tsk. I know right. Everyday study study study. Study and tuition until want to die already.janet_lee88:

Deprived of childhood sia! XD
Now, I think I have lost count of the number of times I stepped into Popular since my son started P1. The staff there think I am a tutor buying books...when actually I am checking out suitable ones to coach my 2 kids. Every day, it's either grammar, vocab, synthesis, comprehension, math or Chinese with my p2 daughter so that she stays in touch and not shocked when there are surprise tests.
My daughter is a Nov child and she is slow. It is heart breaking to have to keep her on her toes all the time. -

Are we the only country in the world with such high stakes exams at such a young age?? Some of our kids 10, 11 or 12 don't even know what it means to study or how to go about doing it.
When my dd1 was in a french primary school, she was taught strategies to learn and \"study\". Teachers actually taught kids :
--spelling strategies and rules
--editing written work
--taking notes and using a highlighter effectively.
Kids were also asked about their learning styles and given several strategies to try out and evaluate for themselves which worked best. Organising, planning ahead and breaking down tasks is not something children know instinctively. They must be taught these skills.
IMHO Primary kids in general (with some exceptions of course) are not ready for high stakes exams (PSLE) because they are still in the process of learning how to learn and study effectively and how to get organized. It is because of the PSLE that parents/tutors are spending so much time, sweat and tears to compensate for their children's lack of maturity in 'studying'. We tell our kids 'go and study' I do that all the time too...what does it actually mean to the child???
Doing practice papers all day is fine for smart kids who already have all the skills dished out to them. Practice does make perfect. But for a child who is lacking in certain skills/concepts necessary for the PSLE, the words \"go and study\" would be too vague as they were not really taught how to study and sometimes they don't even know what to study cos everything was just thrown at them in the form of a big test paper. -
Wondering aloud. Actually they can make All Schools to Good Schools…
Suggestion:
Now all the GEP students are at the ‘perceived’ good schools and the standards for PSLE i these schools can go nowhere but UP since every year they take an intake of bright students.
Why dont they beef up the standards or rather the perception of ‘lousier’ schools by making GEP students study in these schools instead? Ie, so when these non popular schools have GEP students - then def their standards will go up as well - self prophercy - cos when these non popular schools produce top students - then the demand for these will go up - and tada… we have more ‘perceived’ good schools liao!!
Then maybe review the scheme of where GEP students should be stationed at - every 5 years? So that all schools will have a chance of hosting these students…
In any case… im assuming that the teacher quality in all schools are good rite??
Workable you guys reckon? -

Unless ....
:scratchhead:  ALL the GEP T and Accompanying Resources ALL Move En-Mass Where the GEP-ers Go!
Or Even Better ....
Keep the GEP T and Accompanying Resources in the Current Sch, And Build a New Team of GEP T and Accompanying Resources in the Next Designated GEP Sch!
Then ....
Hopefully, Eventually, ALL Sch Will Be Good Sch! Ha Ha ....

I have a girliend whose only child is also in the same level as my P4 DD1. Both were in the same school in P1 but I know that this dear friend already put her girl in the waitlist of the other \"good/better\" school in our neighborhood
So, when the chance for her to transfer her girl to one of the \"good/better\" school, she did it immediately
So, when I asked her what her definition of \"good/better\" school? Her reply,\" the PSLE result must be good; at least more than 10% score 250 & above for the last PSLE result!\" :scared:
