I thought 'tiongs' are quite common..
Tiong means 中 as in 中国 in Hokkien right? XD
Sometimes I call cheena people ah Tiong also (阿中) -
Due to my work, I travel to China very often. I can tell you…if this guy consider us as dogs, then I am sure in his heart he sure despise his countrymen very very much. In fact, I guess he despise himself so much that he started to insult other people due to his inferiority complex.
yes, actually during the second world war period, all chinese people (including chinese singaporean) were been called \"cheena\" (支那) by Japs...
I didn't follow the details of the case. What is \"bie san\"?Ichigokun:
[Cheena, or Chi Na, pronounced in Japanese as Shina is a derogatory word:
\"Shina or Sina (支那 (シナ)?, pronounced [ɕiꜜna]) are Romanized Japanese transliterations for the Chinese character compound \"支那\" which is viewed by most Chinese people as an offensive term for China. Originally a word used neutrally in both Chinese and Japanese, the word gained a derogatory tone due to its widespread usage in the context of the Second Sino-Japanese War.\"
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shina_%28word%29)
Suggestion: Avoid using 'Cheena' which most of us take humorously for, esp. amongst Chinese and Japanese - sensitive lah.
The terms \"cheena\" and \"chink\" have been used on Singaporean Chinese as well. It all depends on the context. My friend encountered a racist slur when she was in the US. She was called a chink, among other nasty things.
now in the deep heart of Japanese, are they treat different nationality chinese people different? -
kitcat:
I have a Japanese friend that lives in Kyushu, Yamaga-ken (九州,山鹿县). He doesn't call me cheena. And Singaporeans in Japan are generally viewed differently from PRC Chinese.

Now \"cheena\" is more so reserved for the Mainland PRCs only. Singaporean Chinese aren't called as such.
支那 doesn't really sound wrong anyway. I usually just view it as a racist slang towards PRC.
Well, racist isn't the correct word to use anyway. I'm Chinese too. Let's call it countrycist / nationalicist -
To the Japs, anyone who is non-Jap is considered "gai-jin".
