You go back to the original contract which says 4 off days. She can't insist on working and make you pay her if you don't need her to work. It has to be mutually agreeable.

Huh? Not go to TWC2 and Home to complain your maid don't want rest meh? I'm sure they will sort her out. :evil:

Imagine you get a new job - at the end of one week your new boss thinks you are pretty useless. Does that mean that he/she won't let you take Saturday & Sunday.

No they will let you take sat and Sunday off, and also Monday to Fridays too. I know if I chat on the phone too long at work on non work related
matters, or if through my own issue don't have enough sleep such that my work is affected, my employer will ask me to go back and 'eat myself'.

Ha..that's quite true. If I m still under probation, I don't get to enjoy all benefits like annual leave or medical leave. My pay will be deducted. I remember when my boss saw me using IPhone too often, he complain to my HR who then come and talk to me. So why are maids so different from us?

So now maids are given office workers benefits, weekly off days. Wonder why therir called domestic workers, they are actually in a different category, they came in to our houses to attend to housework etc, they live in our homes, given food and lodging and now we hv to let them off evry wk. I think the government should issue a different pass not work permit.

My hb works on most weekends and I have 2 young kids (1+/ 3+). During the weekdays, my mum and maid man over my kids. Having a maid allows me to bring the kids out on my own (and the maid) during weekends when my hb is at work. Now that I am supposed to give the maid an offday, she will go out and enjoy while we have to coop at home. How wonderful…


How come the idea of going maidless just become more attractive?
I think I should start sourcing for childcare. I think I will save more $$ and also headache. I havent even found a good enuff maid, waiting for a replacement now and I am expected to give a half past six maid offday. Great.

Hi ZuEn, that’s exactly how I feel. Actually maybe can work with agencies to give off only maybe after 1month? Their loan are so high and usually can stretch to 8-9 months. During the first month do we give them more than $20 so that they can go out? Maybe $50? And because they are new so may get lost on their way home, so we need to provide them Hp?

I know it's not easy but surely you can handle taking them out on your own? It may be a challenge when they are so young and you may have to pick and choose the places but it can be done. All of my friends in other parts of the world do it all the time, every week. We have been spoiled; we complain about children being pampered because of having maids at home but I think we are too.

Just thought of something, not sure if anyone else thought the same way.


With maids now getting a weekly off, what if these maids moonlight as PT cleaners on their off days to earn extra income. Since they get 4 sundays off a month (for e.g.), they can regularly have a pool of atlast 4 homes thay they can do in a month. At S$ 10 an hour and an average of 3 hours per house, they can easily earn $120 a month as extra!

If they do get caught, then who bears all the mess? Has the govt thought of all this? Will the employer be caught in this?

I was going to say the same thing. We've always given the helper a weekly day off because we like being on our own. It can be done, really. We've lugged a baby, a toddler and kid around on our own. There were times when we found ourselves trooping to the public loo 3x in a row as each sequentially needed 'to go'. Tiring, time-consuming but it can be done. Don't be too ambitious about trips. Just pick one destination and stay there.

Also if you look around on weekends, you'll actually see many families without helpers. The parents do fine. It really can be done.
