Hi, my son is 4 now and will be in K1 next year. He knows the 26 letters and the letters sound but he cannot read (at all) eventhough we have been reading to him every night 😢 . I would like to send him to phonics class. I have done some \"shopping\" at nearby ctr but so far those ctr I talked to do not allow me to speak to their teachers and of course all say theirs is the best. Can anyone help?

      - any recommended phonics school for him (based on your experience) in the west?
      - any recommended home-based phonics program in Bt Batok area?

      TIA
Try ICANRead. Book a free assessment appointment for your child by calling the centre. No obligations.
If your boy knows only single alphabet sounds, then most likely start
from level 1 - TCS. If he knows all 26 letter sounds very well, plus some blends (two letters combined eg. cl, bl) then can start from Level 2 - PRP.

L0: Little Learners (2.5 years old)
L1:TCS - Thinking and Creative Skills Programme
L2: PRP - Preliminary Reading Skills Programme
      L3: ICR - I CAN READ
L4: AWES - Advanced Writing & Exam Skills (6 to 12 years old)

Below is the link (I think your nearest is Jurong East branch)

        hi,
my ds1 only knows how to read mid to end of K1 after he had attended basic phonics class (his pcf outsource to dowell; we paid separate affordable fees for that) and mostly after i introduce sight words to him.
you can try introducing sight words gradually as they make up bulk of any sentence structure.

Phonics in the west have Jan & Elly at Railmall. I did not try them out.

          Hi poohbear,

I think the MMI Maths is good but it takes a good centre or teacher to deliver it...

I guess the one in JE may not have the teachers or rather not enough take-up to open a class...I will look around for some good centre for maths, and I'm not too keen on abacus coz there is no one to guide my kid if he ask an abacus question... furthermore, it is not P1 syllabus, won't it lead to confusion later....

i remember when i was a small kid, my grandma used to teach me abacus, but till now, i could say....it's not used in school, so eventually, when it's out of sight, it's out of mind....

Just to add, I am speaking from experience as my girl was from

ICanRead Woodlands Civic Centre. L0&1 may have locally trained
teachers while L2 and above are usually foreigners.
They pin up the teachers' credentials and photos, so take a look when
you drop by their centres. šŸ˜„

There is a I Can Read at Lot 1 Chua Chu Kang.

My boy is also going K1 next year and he is still unable to read too. Well from memory, yes but independantly no.

My girl too was only able to start reading by the 2nd half of K1 and now in K2, she is reading and understanding at the level of a P2 child according to her teacher.

I did not send them for any additional enrichments aside from the phonics lessons that they go to in their childcare.

I guess if you have constantly been reading to them and have created an environment that is conducive towards nurturing a reader, then no need to panic yet, see if he picks it up next year, he might surprise you.

Anyone put their child at "I can read system", Simei branch? Can comment? Any improvement in English after the course? How long is the course and how much?

Not sure how old then can send my child there.

                      Hi ksunflower,

mayb you can decide after you try out the phonics class at JE.

I send my gal for abacus more for the overall development, not just for the abacus skills. The mental arithmetric is supposed to help with right brain development too.

Honestly, half year into the program now, i cant really tell the effect yet. Will hv to keep monitoring. šŸ™
