      (4) The committee members (decided or has decided or have decided) to make Mr Lee the next Chairman of the Greenland Club two months ago.
      Hi

We use the simple past tense for an event or action which occurred in the past and is finished at the time of speaking.

      This video may be useful.

      I’d go for this answer.

The committee members decided to make Mr Lee the next Chairman of the Greenland Club two months ago.

      Best wishes

        (a) When the wind blows, all the windows rattle.
        Or
        (b) When the wind blows, all the windows rattled.
        Hi

Let me give it a try.

        (2) The bush fire spreads quickly due to the high temperature.

        (3) Among all the designers, Celine is the only one who has come up with the new designer pieces every other month.

        (5) All the windows rattle. The wind blows.
        (a) When the wind blows, all the windows rattle.

          Hi

Anyone can help to answer the following questions with some explanations ?

          (1) May I know what is the difference between \"died of old age\" and \"died from old age\" ?

          (6) The chairman of the debate competition advised the two teams to speak (loud/loudly/louder/ more loudly) in the finals as the audience gave feedback that the debaters did not speak loud enough in the semi finals.
          Hi

          Let me try.

          (1) I think we usually say “died of old age”.

          (5) An adjective modifies a noun or pronoun.
          loud, louder

An adverb modifies or describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
          loudly, more loudly

Watch this video to find out more about adjectives and adverbs.
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HPKwhngB-U&feature=related

I’d more inclined to go for “more loudly”.

The chairman of the debate competition advised the two teams to speak more loudly in the finals as the audience gave feedback that the debaters did not speak loud enough in the semi finals.

          Best wishes

              Hi

Any good English assessment books, websites or tutor to recommend ?

Areas weak in are S&T, cloze passage, grammar, vocab, compre.

Are the answers found in English assessment books and top English exam papers reliable and are there books with explanations not just the answers ?

              Thank you.

                Hi all

                Can anyone help?

How do you use the following words "practice" vs "practise"?..

                Eg:
It’s important to [practice] or [practise] your English whenever possible.

                And:
You need more [practice] or [practise] before you take the exam.

                Thanks in advance.

Hi my daughter is particular week in comprehension since P1 and despite group tuition and my guidance, she has yet to show any improvement. I am at a loss as this year is her crucial year. Anyone can share with me methods to help her improve her understanding and write the correct answers? Alternatively, any tutors that specialised in comprehension that you can recommend me?? I stay in CCK area. Tks

As the word comprehension explains we have to understand! Over the years i realised there is no easy way to do well in comprehension. In order to understand the passage, the child has to understand the vocab used in it, n hence it boils down to how much he/she reads and how strong is his/her English.

If given a short period of time, i will choose to work on teaching the child
                        1) how to identify what the question is looking for
                        2) spotting the key sentence from the passage
                        3) understand what the sentence and
                        4) answer to wat the question wants.

All these may take alot of practice to master but i do see improvements if its done well. How it helps!
