Totally agree that alumni system should be kept. It’s for the benefit of our future grandchildren… our own Singaporean citizens as this is possibly the only phrase that foreigners or PR have no control over.

PR may be selected over citizens, as volunteers if they have the special skills or "resources" a particular school need, since selection is so subjective.
PR can also rent a place next to the school while we don’t have the flexibility like them.

Only alumni is something they can’t have, so please, at least help our future generation so they don’t have to fight with PR right from the start.
In fact I am already very worried that when our kids grow up, they will not be able to find jobs easily with such tough competition and "hungry"foreigners in our land. Unless we really drill our kids to score better, if not we will definite loss out as our children are too used to good life and not as "hungry"as them. Look at the usual top scorers trend and we will know…

Sorry…back to this topic, so all we can is to give them a good head start in the choice school, the rest is dependent on how they can strive in this competitive world.
Hence alumni is crucial for our next, next next, next next next generations…

          mrswongtuition:

It's been a long time since I've been posting in KSP as I've been busy with my newborn.

          My opinion:
What is the purpose of setting up an ALUMNI in each school?
It is to allow students who have benefitted from that school's efforts and system to continue serving the school and give back to the current school.
Take a look a schools with strong alumni support, the alumni do put in a lot of effort to aid the school to progress in their systems and programs for the existing and future students.
Isn't it fair for these ex-students to have priority to place their children in a school which they helped to build?
Be it ex-students who just graduated from the school or graduated many many many years ago, all have contributed to the school in one way or another.
When I was in primary school, we were involved in 1001 fund raising programs to improve the schools facilities. By the time they were built, I didn't get to enjoy them. Did I bear grudges? NO! I know my one day, when I have children, they might possibly enjoy the fruit of my labour.
My contributions benefitted the next few batches of students and similarly, I would want my children to study in the school I'm so proud of. I can proudly say: I had a hand in raising funds for the school you are studying in.

If this phase is scrapped, what next?
There's no perfect system. There will definitely be unhappy parents one way or another. Especially since many young couples now think ahead in their family planning, they would have probably bought houses near their alma maters in hope that their soon-to-come children will benefit from staying near the school.

Instead of causing an uproar on changing the system, why not focus on how to help those 'not-so-popular' schools improve and make them 'popular'?
Time spent on this issue can be better spent on thinking of ways to allocate more budget to those schools without strong alumni backing so that they can offer the same programs and opportunities to their students.

How about school teachers? Priority for their kids?
And, as an ex-school teacher, I would say it would be fair to give teachers priority to register in schools within 3-5km radius from their house or current school.
Being a teacher, it's hard for us to take leave to be parent volunteers. Even if we manage to get leave, it would most likely be spent catching up on lesson planning, creating worksheets, marking students' work or slaving on the endless admin work. They sacrifice a lot of personal and family time. It's not a job that ends when the bell rings. Yes, they are paid salary, but if you calculate their salary based on the multiple roles they take and the long hours, they are paid less than factory workers.
Allowing priority at all schools would be a little too much, just schools near the homes or workplace would be fair enough.

And many do not know this, but the current priority for staff of existing schools only applies to primary school teachers.
Secondary school teachers do not enjoy any priority unless they are teaching in full schools (e.g. St Nicholas).

I believe we are all worried and unsure of our next move for our children's P1 registration. I really hope that there will be a conclusion fast, so that parents have ample time to make plans.

But if a PR is enroll into a school under other different phase, their next generation, next next, next next generation will be able to join the alumni and get into the school.... so I think it is not exactly right to say PR has no control 🙂

Oh yes, u are right. PR will still be able to join alumni after they get their foot in. 😢

Hmmm... Let's hope these PRs would move on to their next targeted country by then and not compete with our next next generation. In any case, most PRs are merely using Singapore as a stepping stone, just earn their first pot of gold and leave.

I have a PR colleague (burmanese) with a PR turned citizen wife (burmanese) and a citizen son (coz born in Singapore). His son will have the same chances as our children, since the son is a citizen. He demonstrated his 'loyalty' to Singapore when he told us his intention to educated his son in America and to renounce his PR and his family citizenship in Singapore once they get their green card! Like that also can... :frustrated:

Guess to these immigrants, Singapore is still not a place where they feel they belong. They will just move out once they have the opportunity. Not many has the intention to stay here long term, so why shld they be given the same priority as us? Don't understand.

it is impossible to renounce citizenship without serving out the NS liability, since the son is born a citizen here

He was already 14 or 15 when he renounced and went to Australia. Never come back to serve NS. 🤷 Good life over there.
