It's ok...no need to apologize. I totally understand what you're going through. It's very sad and frustrating that parents have to monitor and coach kids when school is compulsory.Again, the task of enforcing, monitoring, discussing what is written is passed back to parents :stompfeet:
The MA teacher is also a disappointment. He believed my boy is capable to do more, but is not willing to do more. So? He does not push? I was so angry, I sort of told him off that it is the sch responsibility to assign work & to push the pupils. Why else shld I leave my child in sch for 8 hours doing the minimal, then go back home to do more worksheets to be given by parents becos the sch does not give in the sch?
Sorry for the ranting. I am really very disappointed.
Back then, my son had CA1 and SA1/2 in P1. I had to be very hands-on with him. This no CA/SA thing in PH now is scary...will kids in P2 know what to do in Oct when they face their first major exam ? Come P3, will they have a bigger shock when there is Science thrown in plus an increase in workload ? -

We already had a big shock in P3 English paper... Science paper was acceptable....

All this talk is getting me worried as I don't revise any school work with ds (except for spelling and the occasional presentation), preferring instead to spend the time to do other stuff with him. :gloomy:
U should be worried, no joke.
Last year, the MA teacher did not use the textbook, but made the pupils kept a MA journal exercise book that recorded impt notes.
This year, the MA teacher did not use the textbook nor practise keeping a journal.
For my younger boy who is not an auditory learner, u can imagine how much info flied over his head at sch:faint: He did not understand the order of 4 operations, he did not understand fraction divided by a whole number. And I found out these while doing damage repair by going through term 1 MA with him ytd.
The MA teacher brushed these qns (order of operations & fraction divided by a whole number) as CARELESS mistakes my boy made
And I was naive to think that this shld be a GREAT MA teacher :frustrated:
After thinking abt this outsourcing of work to parents, I am seriously considering not letting my boy continuing with the Tues/Thurs supplementary lessons, except for CL lessons. -
Jennifer:
I am worried. I'm internalising the issue as I type. When I see parents - of what I considered as very smart kids - complaining about teaching/exam stds, I can sort of predict the kind of road block my ds will come up against in the near future.
U should be worried, no joke.

Will my ds be tasked with P4 level qns in the year-end exams? Maybe. Will it hit us like a train? Definitely. Is there anything we can do about this? Not much.
I think I've to pyscho myself not to care too much about the short term outcome for now.

Son flunked CL. What should I expect for SA1 ? Another heart attack ?
It’s really hard to understand why PH is so relaxed…although I did mention the heavy workload last year. When I meant heavy workload, I was referring to stuff like art, social studies, project work. P5 Math is very tough, as we all know. All the more, teachers should be preparing the kids to handle the problem sums and how to handle the exam - Section A (no calculator) and have to finish questions within a short period of time - speed and accuracy. -

Pei Hwa is not a school which allows parents to be laid back. It has never been so since my son's time in P1...ie 2007. Revision has to be consistent. Once principal issues CA/SA memo, there is no time to start revising from scratch. -

The P3 CA EL paper is shocking but should be a one time thing. Will my ds be tasked with P4 level qns in the year-end exams? Maybe. Will it hit us like a train? Definitely. Is there anything we can do about this? Not much.
The school get bombarded by parents a lot.
I still think it is the setter and vetter being inexperience in setting papers and EL HOD do not have a good process to oversee the paper setting process. Having about 50-60% of the cohort passing EL (my prediction) in this year P3 EL CA1 is bad enough for them ... it has backfired on them and they will review their process.
So ... I do not think you will get a P4 question in their first major exam in P2 SA2. The school will have a hard time to justify MOE's policy of removing the P1/2 exams. -

I found out that my son did not understand the order of 4 operations, and I thought it is beacuse he didn't pay attention in class.

But when I found out that he did not understand fraction multiplication, cannot apply this concept in the problem sums and the teacher didn't correct him as long as he got the correct answer. I realised that something is wrong for his math this year. When I try to look for the textbook and found out that they did not use the textbook.
Same as you, I am doing damage repair by going through term 1 MA. I also bought one more homework book and pick up some q, let my son redo the q, make sure he use the correct concept.
唉, 求人不如求己. -

The school doesn't need to set a P4 question for P2 SA2...the setter just has to open the math assessment book, find the challenging ones, modify a little and the kids will suffer.

My son scored 63 for his Eng CA1. Heard half the class failed section B. I dread to think of SA1 now. He is lucky to be considered the average student. Next heart attack coming soon. -
Trapwithin:
But I recalled couple of years ago 2/3 of cohort failed Maths or something like that. It seems like history repeating itself leh. So I won't raise my hopes too much. But even if ds is to fail this year-end exam, it won't be all doom and gloom. I'll try to use this failure as a opportunity to shape him. Yes, it's easier to be understanding once I know what all the 前辈 before me have gone thru.

Heard of Nick Leeson? Rarely have I seen a high-flyer fall as badly as he did, but today he circumvent all that and got his life back. I'll gladly exchange all the intellect in the world for ds to have a grit like his. But I don't mean I want ds to bankrupt a 100 yr old bank hor.

Your ds was one of the award winners last year right? If even he has problems, then I better find the nearest wall to bash my head. :stupid:I found out that my son did not understand the order of 4 operations, and I thought it is beacuse he didn't pay attention in class.
