Hi can I just ask mommies here if you buy assessments books for your kids even though you have already sent them to tuition/enrichment centres? Or you don't buy them since they've already got tuition?

I did not buy additional assessment books...centre already provided. sometimes let my dd practise past yr papers only..I dont want to burden her with so many assessments...

Personally for me, I like TAS and it works very well for me. But I think you could shop around and look at different centres approaches before making up your mind. Some centres work for some, some work for others.

But most importantly we need to also revise the work learnt at the centre with our kids, cannot just depend on the centre or teachers. I find my kids learn most when I help them to reinforce what they learn.

          Hi

My DS is very weak in compo. which centre is more effective in creative writing? we are staying at the eastern. Thanks

          Hi netserver,

Weakness in compo can mean many things, child will need to have on hand understanding of grammar, adequate vocab and finally some ideas to be able to come up with good compos.

Let us know if you have more specific questions about the centers and I'm sure kspers will be glad to help.

          Cheers

            Hi netserver,

If you are looking at TAS, they have classes at paya Lebar singpost centre. My friend puts her kids with creative horizons at orchard area and she likes it there. Heard they have a placement test so that may be a bit more stress. TAS conducts a simple test but that is only to find out how your child is - they (TAS) don’t reject kids based on the scores attained.

Go check out and see which one works for you. 🙂

              Hi hquek

              thanks for the fast response.

does TAS solely focus on compo writing only?

No. They do the whole gamut from grammar, vocab, compre and compo. There is some emphasis on synthesis when the child is P3/4.

The one thing they don’t do much is oral. But I heard they have some oral classes for the P6.

For their classes, one thing I like is that they don’t let the child copy much. When I see my child’s compre, confirm he did it by himself. But there is a fair amount of spelling and dictation. These are useful for the child to remember usable phrases in his compo work.

                  Hi Councillor,

What’s your friend’s feedack for Creative Horizons? I am living at Tiong Bahru, very far from any of the TAS locations. Any good recommendations for English Writing classes around my area?

I assume you are talking to me.

Anyway, my friend is quite happy with CH. Classes are small and she's happy with what they cover. Her kids are also happy inside. Apparently the feedback given by the teacher is quite spot on also. perhaps you can take a look?

Good day all. Have anyone of you heard of "Language Learner" before? It is a Balmoral Plaza.

                        Hi bellyhoney,

Sorry for the delayed reponse. I was away for a long business trip. Creative writing one week, English another week. They have 3 English teachers, so you may want to ask about the credentials of the English teachers and the MOE schools they had taught and let your child do a trial class to try out if she can fit with the teacher’s delivery style before confirming the sign up.

I believed their school’s policy on class size is 6. Because, a month ago, the centre’s supervisor called me for permission to allow 2 new parents’ children in P6 to join my girl’s Math class, increasing the class size presently from 6 to 8. I am okay with it. Shortly, I realised the new parents are both my male kakees…LOL. They told me they may want to give me call if I voted againsit their entry.
