This time I copied the email to an HOD. It isn't the marks that are important but I needed an excuse to email her without sounding like I was correcting her English. I have not received any response to my email since Monday.
It has been 1 year. It has been one year of emails that go either unanswered or are answered after 3 weeks. I have never once succeeded in getting her on the phone... and if I leave a message for her to call, 2 weeks can pass before she calls. I need to leave another 2 messages. So far, I have talked to her twice on the phone... both times, I had to leave multiple messages and emails to get a call back.
We don't have a bad relationship. When I do get her on the phone, we have a good chat. I've never been rude to her and until this week's Monday, I have never given her negative feedback (both times I spoke to her last year were to ask questions)... but there were SO MANY mistakes in her CA1 marking this time that I finally took the step to email her, and I also dropped a word with the HOD.
Should I call? Should I email the Principal? Should I keep quiet and teach my son myself (I can more than cope), and complain next year bringing all her marking along with me as evidence? I feel very helpless and frustrated.
What would other Mommies/Daddies do bearing in mind that my DS still has to stay in her class till the end of the year? I need some advice because I am on the verge of marching to school and requesting to see the Principal... and that will be so unpleasant for the Teacher and I.

Thanks Mawar.. :hugs: There is a part of me that tells me I can't win this one...
My approach is simple. If I have no control over who the teachers are, and if their actions do not cause my kids any physical or emotional damage, I will let it slide. I am a hands off mother, but should I come to know of such incompetent teachers, I will monitor and coach my kids.Chenonceau:

There were 2 separate occasions where my kid lost out some marks in SA2. Every mark, down to decimals, made a difference but after highlighting to the teachers, nothing was done. One excuse was the marks were already submitted etc etc . . . I sat down with my kids, told them that I accept their answers, and if they would like me to pursue the matter I would. In the end, we decided to let it go.
In life we have to pick and choose our battles. We decided against fighting this one. -

Thanks smartmummy... it's sad that polite doesn't work. I've gone on a charm offensive with this T. Doesn't work. I find it hard to be rude though... that's why I am thinking twice.

DD had very good teachers throughout her 6 years of education in her 2 primary schools. No complaints, but heaps of praises. :love:
DS, on the other hand, was not so lucky. :gloomy: Every alternate year (in his primary school), he would get a lousy teacher, starting from primary 1.
DS's P1 form teacher taught him Math. Very often, there was no homework, but just before CA 1 and SA1, the teacher would suddenly pile the students with work...up to 20 pages of work in a day. One week before his SA1, the teacher still had 2 more chapters to teach. Naturally, I was very frustrated. Being a systematic person, I typed out everything the teacher should have done, but failed to carry out. It was 2 pages long!!! Also printed copies of my evidence and arranged a meeting with the P...
When DS returned to school in term 3, after the hols, he had a change of teacher.
At P3, DS had a lousy EL teacher who, like Chenonceau's, marked his compositions wrongly. He corrected DS's \"dialled\" (BE) to \"dialed\"(AE) and wrote that there is no such word as \"relived\". :scared:
For picture compositions, DS wrote in the first-person account, but the teacher failed him, insisting that it must be written in the 3rd person's account (I checked - there was nothing in the instruction about writing in the 3rd person's account).
I printed copies of DS's work whereby the teacher had marked wrongly and met up with the EL HOD (Not very nice to always march into P's office!
). Anyway, the HOD was a very understanding lady and had taught DS in P2. She agreed that I was right and had a talk with both the teacher and DS.
The talk with DS was necessary as she had to clarify his doubts since both the mother and his teacher taught differently. For that, I was very appreciative. (Amazingly, his EL teacher was posted to MOE so DS again had a change of teacher in term 3.)
Just sharing some of our bad experiences.

Hi, Chen, it seems that this is a competency issue. Your ds teacher may not be ready to teach P5&6 yet. Once a child learnt something incorrect, it will be difficult pedagogically for the child to "unlearnt" it. So it would be better to alert the HOD (which you did) and might want to set up an appointment with him/her to discuss the issues. Hopefully with the feedback given, they can have someone to vet the mark scheme and even better change the teacher next year.

Hi Chen, some questions i cd offer for ur thinking: what’s your desired outcome from the action u take? Teacher to become aware of her incompetency, then do something abt improving her competency? School become aware of problem? Do u believe teacher can change in the short term? What can be changed & what cannot? What’s really a system issue or individual issue here? Of its lack of clear marking rubrics & counter-checking of marking, then it’s system issue.

If I am absolutely sure that I can provide the necessary coaching for my child to do well for PSLE, I would match into the principal office and throw the stack of mistakes on his desk, thereafter, homeschool kid at home till exam periods. Come on, how can we tolerate further? She is an English teacher where the language is supposed to be her forte. Your son is lucky to have you to be able to spot her mistakes. Think about the rest of the classmates. They would most probably be misled by her, and the most unfortunate thing is learning the incorrect things at this last moment... The principal must to something to save the rest of the children. :yikes:
How about yearly \"PSLE teaching proficiency\" exam for the school teachers?
and the papers marked by other school HOD, results submitted to MOE. Dec holidays is 5 weeks, take 1 or 2 days to sit for the papers not that difficult right? After all, they are tested on their forte.. which would be chicken feed to them.. like filling survey questionnaire like that.. -
Ban the enrichment centers
ban the ex-school teachers to teach outside
so t can’t resign and go for tutoring
reduce the workload to the Ts
so they can have time to upgrade themselves
