      Ban the enrichment centers

ban the ex-school teachers to teach outside
so t can't resign and go for tutoring
reduce the workload to the Ts
so they can have time to upgrade themselves
      1) allow teachers to just TEACH
      2) outsource non-teaching stuff like song & dance, CCA to non-teaching staff
      3) increase pay of teachers
      4) reduce unnecessary meetings
Basically something has to be done to address problems of teachers and high turn over rate. Teachers are humans and they have own families too. Some teachers become adjunct because they don't have to attend meetings or conduct CCA.

Oh dear, this is really a punch in the face for me. I had to withdraw my kids from their activities because of lack of time. No fault on their part but mine. I don't have the time nor patience for their music. Imagine one hour for each instrument for each child, that would be 4 hours (of my time) daily to sit there and watch them practise. Time would be very tight for me. (We have no helper.)

Why can't they just practice on their own?

        .

Hmm, they were only 4 and 6 years old then. Maybe yours can, mine still couldn't at that age. They did not really need me to teach (especially the older one), just that my presence comforted them. Even now.

But now that they are older, yes, I think they are more mature and able to handle practising the instruments on their own. In fact, my son has been requesting to have violin lessons when we return to Sg. That's why I am keeping a lookout for violin teachers.

If your boss gives you or your spouse a contract to state that if you resign from your job, you can't stay in the same industry, would you or your spouse sign it?

What about banning initiaitves like Dad's for Life too - which seeks to get the fathers closely involve in all aspects of their children's upbringing. After all, we know that children with strong parental support will do better academically which is the same outcome as sending them for enrichment classes.

What about allowing this Dad's for Life initiative, but banning dads from enriching their children academically so as to even out the odds with the have-nots?

What I'm highlighting here is, please aim your turrets carefully at the source of the 'issue'. How many parents here who are shooting down enrichment centers are busy- and more than capable of - enriching their children themselves.

Hi Chen, some questions i cd offer for ur thinking: what's your desired outcome from the action u take? Teacher to become aware of her incompetency, then do something abt improving her competency? School become aware of problem? Do u believe teacher can change in the short term? What can be changed & what cannot? What's really a system issue or individual issue here? Of its lack of clear marking rubrics & counter-checking of marking, then it's system issue.

These are lovely questions... helps me focus. Draws down the emotional response a lot.

                  1) agree.

                  2) some schools doing that already.

                  3) I tot this was done last year.

                  4) at PTA last year, this teacher said she has no idea why I need to see her about my dd and I was like :siao: teacher.

                    MummySTay:
DD had very good teachers throughout her 6 years of education in her 2 primary schools. No complaints, but heaps of praises.

DS, on the other hand, was not so lucky. :gloomy: Every alternate year (in his primary school), he would get a lousy teacher, starting from primary 1.Ā

DS's P1 form teacher taught him Math. Very often, there was no homework, but just before CA 1 and SA1, the teacher would suddenly pile the students with work...up to 20 pages of work in a day. One week before his SA1, the teacher still had 2 more chapters to teach. Naturally, I was very frustrated. Being a systematic person, I typed out everything the teacher should have done, but failed to carry out. It was 2 pages long!!! Also printed copies of my evidence and arranged a meeting with the P...
When DS returned to school in term 3, after the hols, he had a change of teacher.Ā

At P3, DS had a lousy EL teacher who, like Chenonceau's, marked his compositions wrongly. He corrected DS's \"dialled\" (BE) to \"dialed\"(AE) and wrote that there is no such word as \"relived\".Ā  :scared:
For picture compositions, DS wrote in the first-person account, but the teacher failed him, insisting that it must be written in the 3rd person's account (I checked - there was nothing in the instruction about writing in the 3rd person's account).
I printed copies of DS's work whereby the teacher had marked wrongly and met up with the EL HOD (Not very nice to always march into P's office! šŸ˜‰ ). Anyway, the HOD was a very understanding lady and had taught DS in P2. She agreed that I was right and had a talk with both the teacher and DS.Ā

The talk with DS was necessary as she had to clarify his doubts since both the mother and his teacher taught differently. For that, I was very appreciative. Ā (Amazingly, his EL teacher was posted to MOE so DS again had a change of teacher in term 3.)

Just sharing some of our bad experiences. šŸ˜„
Thanks for sharing... talking to the HOD and teacher face to face is something to think about too.

Hi, Chen, it seems that this is a competency issue. Your ds teacher may not be ready to teach P5&6 yet. Once a child learnt something incorrect, it will be difficult pedagogically for the child to \"unlearnt\" it. So it would be better to alert the HOD (which you did) and might want to set up an appointment with him/her to discuss the issues. Hopefully with the feedback given, they can have someone to vet the mark scheme and even better change the teacher next year.

Yup... meet up with HOD after I have calmed down...
