There are really varying standards of Teachers' proactiveness & communication skills. This year my DD has an exceptionally caring, proactive & fantastically communicative & responsive teacher. She's in P5 now and while generally all the teachers in the last 4 years have been good but this year is her FT is exceptional by many standards. DD is in the \"worst\" performing class and this teacher has quite a handful of kids with learning difficulties including my DD, yet she takes pains to find out about each child's specific needs and work with the parents to accomodate the child. I shared about DD's ADD & teacher has spoken with me about using specific strategies to help DD be on task in class. She's allowed DD to walk around in between periods, use the timer, ensures she is clear about her homework, and most importantly, very gentle yet firm.

At the end of each week, this FT emails all the parents, with a substantial paragraph about each subject, what topics were covered and what worksheets were done and highlighting activities conducted. She responses to parents' email within 48 hours (she tries v hard to reply within 24 hours).

If there's a desired vision of what a caring & responsible teacher looks like, I would say this teacher is it!! I intend to write a glowing testimonial to the Principal about this teacher. I'm accepting my DD may not excel in academics but to have a caring teacher who strives to encourage & help non-performing kids to do well is truly rewarding for me.

Happy to see a parent who wrote praise about teacher. :rahrah:

Happy for your dd to have such a good teacher.

Maybe we should set out a new post to praise all the GOOD teacher we met. :please:

I also have been thinking of it.Its a good motivation to them.

This is the Mark of a Teacher - teaching is a calling not a job,
its the Architect of the soul.
beanbear and DD jia you :hugs:

Yup, she was totally cruel to do that to a child, and her student. When hubby and I met her for PTM, naturally it wasn't 'shiok'. She was also the FT. There was absolutely no reason why she had to make him stand in front of the class. What's wrong with a parent asking what will be tested for CA?

did you email her and cc to the HOD..?

so her HOD may hv the impression that she not doing her \"job\"....  jk.....

If I am you, I will do what limlim recommended.
If that didn't work, go to the VP or P.
The ultimate button will be MOE .. the school will be totally stressed.

You have a case, what she did was not right.
My son weak in MT,though T doesn't find anything to tell me to improve. :? She just asked me to send tuition. :yikes:

It was my dd MT teacher who called me to advise on hw to improve dd MT, dd failed her MT. The teacher didnt ask me to send her for tuition (maybe because dd is in neighbourhood school ? šŸ˜‰ ) instead she told me to help my dd but i told her that idk Chinese so cant teach at all i just send dd fr tuition, she said i can learn just like her when first time came frm china didnt know english but together with her son learn english by them self :scratchhead: she spoke to me just like a motivational speaker motivating me to try n not to give up... i bet she doesnt know that chinese is the most difficult language on earth ( to me )

After we complain in KSP about Teachers asking us to get tuition, from now on Teachers will all say no need tuition but PARENT NEEDS TO HELP. Instead of resolving the root problem of insufficient teaching, teachers are advised to refrain from telling parents to get tuition?

Tutor teach or parent teach - same difference. Those who can't teach, pay others to do so. Those who can't teach and can't pay... oh well...
I believe if you tell the teacher your difficulties, most teacher is willing to help.

My dd P4 math teacher called me last year in term 1 to inform me that my girl math drop as compare to P3 SA2. From Band 1 to Band 3.
She asked me whether I am able to guide her at home if my girl occurred any problem. I told her frankly that my dh and I are not very educated, I am unable to help her because I am worry that I may teach her wrongly which will make thing worst. I told her my girl also don't have tuition, so all this while my girl is doing all her school work by herself. Her teacher is so understanding that she said she will monitor my girl in class and if necessary, she will give her extra lesson after school. After that from Term 2 onward, my girl math go back to band 1. šŸ˜„

one moment someone complained about tuition, and everyone says all the teachers have been asking the students to go get tuition ..... what a nation of tuition teachers and bla bla bla ........

and after some people start to say teachers never say go for tuition ...... ....

think must start a new thread \"Teachers never say go get tuition ....\" so that everyone can post there ....

Thanks Mrs Seah... DS's Chinese teacher is a gem even though she did once scold DS in class for having a Mom who asks for CL Oral supplementary notes (which the school didnot produce and so she could not give). I didn't blame her for it so we are still on good terms.

Lately, I explained to her the difficulties we face and she offered to mark all the practice compos DS does at home. I was afraid to over burden her so I proposed that she mark 1 home-practice compo every 2 weeks for us to gauge DS' progress. I can get Grandma to mark the others. She has 40 students and 4 classes. If everyone comes to her with difficulties, the poor lady will have no life.

Teachers like her would be very much helped by
(1) access to a common pool of e-resources shared amongst all the schools in the country...
(2) smaller classes and
(3) more comprehensive textbooks.
DS' Chinese teacher's face glowed when I thanked her warmly for going through DS' CA1 mistakes with us. Such teachers want to make a difference. The system should help them work. I am convinced it is not her fault that she was unable to give us supplementary materials. She just doesn't have them.

DS English teacher is the opposite. She has misplaced 2 of DS' compos, and she hasn't replied a very polite emails from me, even after a polite reminder. Personally, I won't pursue the matter anymore because I don't see any productive result from it. What I will do is to approach the Principal next year to ensure that she no longer gets to teach Upper Primary English.
