If they find you suitable, MOE will place you to teach as an untrained teacher until the course is available. If MOE has doubts about someone's capability (especially conversing in English, I believe), they may place the candidate as an untrained teacher for a year. Thereafter, the principal will recommend to MOE the suitability of the candidate as a teacher. If found suitable, he/she will be sent for the course.

That's not how it works..

First, they select you for the interview. Then, after the interview, they will decide whether to offer you a teaching position (if they do, meaning already confirmed you as a teacher).

NIE course intake is twice a year I guess. If there is some period until the course, they may place you in a school to teach and experience what is it like to be a teacher, maybe guided by some experienced staff. If you don't like it, you can withdraw. If you like it, you can stay on and wait for the course. Note that you are already confirmed, regardless of how you perform at the schools before the NIE course.

Unless they change the system, then I'm not sure.

Also, note that while waiting for NIE course and during NIE course, the untrained teacher is drawing FULL salary. (~$3.2k, hons, fresh grad)

So, teachers is actually a very attractive profession.. not sure why so many pple complain here and there..

Hv salary range, it depends the interview. Which range moe will put the candidates.

Hmm.. come to think of it, my friend also taught part-time at the school near her house before she applied for training at NIE. No prior teaching experience.

Last time I went to a school for interview, they said they only want adjunct teachers, which means ex-NIE trained teachers..

Maybe different schools got different expectations.. if not NIE trained also can teach part time, I'm looking for such lobangs also..

To be relief teacher, just deposit resume? So far nobody call me to ask me teach. :sad:

Working hours at kindy from 7.30am to 3pm, they follow school holiday. It’s under moe. As for cc, it’s 9 hours working a day, some cc open on sat so teacher needs to come back on sat (half day), but not every sat…1sat work, 2sat off. It’s under mcys…not follow school holiday

I am also thinking of a mid-career switch into teaching. I am a Singapore citizen (born and bred). I have a B.Eng (Hons) and M.Sc, both from NUS. I did well enough at 'A'-levels to be offered a PSC scholarship in teaching, but I rejected it then. I am now almost 40. I am just wondering if I will stand a chance due to my age. I also wonder if my rejection about 20 years ago would have any negative impact on my application?

Is there anyone who is in a similar situation who could share any insights or views?

A friend of mine has a similar story, only that she did take up the scholarship (degree program), but decided to quit after the 1st year, as she was offered to do science, where she has no passion in. She applied to teach again, using her 'A' levels results and was accepted. She did her DipEd and now teaching in a primary school. So I think that if you're really passionate about teaching, give it a try

At the Australian International School careers page, it is stated the pay for a preschool teacher with a Bachelors Degree starts from $8400 onwards. Interesting that they added applicants with a diploma from SEED institute or other non-tertiary institutions need not apply. They must have been flooded with applicants who hold a diploma in preschool education.
