Pace of paper chase too stressful for pupils
RECENTLY, my nephew woke up his parents in the middle of the night, worried that he had forgotten to complete one assignment that had to be submitted in the morning.
He is only a Primary 2 pupil of Seng Kang Primary School, and yet has trouble sleeping because of schoolwork. It was not like this when he started Primary 1, which he enjoyed.
Overloaded with assignments and projects, he spends four hours a day doing schoolwork, and more on weekends. As both his parents work, they do not have much time to supervise or tutor him.
At his age, acquiring knowledge should be a pleasure as he explores every step of his learning journey.
When we checked with the school, we were told that it is working towards achieving top school status. We were shocked that a school that aspires to be among the top pushes its pupils so hard at the expense of their personal development.
At the pace the school is setting, the pupils' interest and enthusiasm for learning will be lost.
Many parents who enrol their children in neighbourhood schools hope that their young ones will enjoy their learning journeys, which will help them throughout their lives.
As much as we appreciate a good education, there are other values that the school should not ignore, especially when it comes to the well-being of a child.
What we fear most is the psychological impact on the children as a result of being pushed so hard at such a young age. -

Inspiring Teacher of English award 2011, Rivervale primary
Mr Julian Victor of Rivervale Primary School is constantly inspired to extend the learning process of his pupils beyond the textbook. He strongly believes in group learning and often gets his students to discuss questions in teams, before sharing their answers with the rest of the class.
Not only do his students become more immersed in his lessons, they even extended this mode of co-operative learning beyond his classes, tutoring each other and learning from their mistakes. His success stems from his view that the character development of his students comes before their grades. By reducing emphasis on “right” or “wrong” answers, and through group discussions and tutoring, his students are more willing to face challenges, and have become more confident in using Standard English to express themselves.
Our P6 pupils have once again given us an upward trend in our PSLE results, with more pupils going to secondary schools, more pupils scoring above 250 and more promoted to the Express stream.

Newer schools in a class of their own
That's a 2008 article! :skeptical: -
Hello all,
Just to draw your attention to the opening of seven new schools island wide. Hope it'll be helpful for all of you as you begin scouting for schools around your area.
For Seng Kang residents, the highest number of new schools will open its doors - three in total. They are Springdale Primary, Sengkang Green Primary and Palm View Primary.
With Springdale Primary and Anchor Green Primary being in close proximity to Nan Chiau Primary (NCPS) and coupled with the fact the NCPS is still undergoing PRIME, we can expect the intake for the school to be lesser than previous years and that the new schools to absorb the surplus.
