All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers

leongstella:
You are even more thick skinned than I thought. You also have no interest at all to at modify your posts despite what some posters here have advised. Like jce told you that guildhall is not the leading, but you did not change anything. In any case, the polarising effect your posts have made is perhaps an indication that you should have thought things through and not put the blame on our 'inferior' Singapore culture. And since you are not planning to discuss anything related to mr elgar kwek's teaching methods, let me get some discussion started for the sake of this thread.
Thank you my dearIntermezzo:
all along i didn't get the impression that leongstella is advertising for Mr Elgar Kwek.
she's just enthusiastic about sharing. the article does talk about his teaching methods, so to me it's relevant to the topic.
:hugs:
Update: I really appreciate your comment. It feels good to have someone understand my point of view. Thank you!
Dreamaurora, I am under the impression that parents will not appreciate teachers taking up lesson time to show DVDs or recordings. So what is your opinion on this and how do you build up the interest in young children? -

This is my dilemma: If I choose to defend Elgar Kwek on his teaching methods, I would only be spitefully beaten down by you (as proven with your insinuation that 'parents will not appreciate teachers taking up lesson time to show DVDs' - in which by the way, it is on top of actual lesson time, not part of it). & who knows, I might be seen as hard-selling his style of teaching.
If I choose not to, I would be perceived as someone whose sole intention is to 'blatantly advertise' for him.
I attached a Business Times news article, which also validates his teaching approach (not necessarily better, but different and may suit others more) - just for one's reading pleasure. No one asked me to elaborate, but instead I am being attacked for advertising.
How can I possibly share anything constructive with you amicably when you sit behind your monitor and label me \"thick-skinned\", \"blatant advertising\"? I am obviously taken aback by the hostility you have displayed, along with the alarming comments I see from dreamaurora.
Whereas for the correction of my posts, fair enough, yes I should edit them. I'd do that.
Look, I have never said Singapore was inferior. I just said it's just different & I am of course experiencing a culture shock here. Who wouldn't when you are being treated like this? Put yourself in my shoes, new to the forum - just want to share - then BOOM, you get all these strange comments?!
If you still like me to share what I know about his teaching, I'd be more than happy to. Although I do think it is much better if you hear it from the man himself, which I suggested to dreamaurora if she wanted to learn more.
I hope you are able to put me out of my dilemma.
To share or not to share, despite nasty comments like 'thick-skinned'? -

. I will post my thoughts in one or two days time.

That is some awsome performance. Who is the artist? If it is you, bravo. You should pursue a performance career. Are you a Yong Siew Toh student?
If you are not the artist and just meant to let us hear the Yamaha C1, then you should clarify. Otherwise, it is a deception to falsely pass off a professional artistโs playing as yours. -

Ok what, this kind of standard quite common among the established teachers' diploma students in Singapore. When I went to Lip Tat's student concert many years back, many of his students already play stuff like Liszt's Paganini Variations and Prokofiev Toccata up to speed. Interestingly, many teachers actually evaluate a student's musicality and talent based on his/her ability to intepret slow and lyrical solo pieces. I've spoken to Fang Yuan (yup, principal of Young Talents) and she said when she judged piano competitions many of young kids nowadays could practically play anything virtuosic nowadays, so typically the judges will evaluate the slower movements or pieces instead to distinguish the contestants. In any case, if there is doubt to the authenticity of the recording, the pianist in question can always come forward to clarify and post an actual video of himself playing. That is some awsome performance. Solo performance career is destined only for the very select few. Need combination of charisma, immense musicality and personality. Even many of the winners of the major competitions around the world realised they couldn't sustain performance career for too long and many ended up teaching in faculties around the world. -
I concur with dreamaurora about young pianistsโ capabilities nowadays. But I do find the instance of the YouTube recording provided above suspicious. It sounds too clean like it was recorded in a recording studio and not at home studio. Normally can hear things like background noise but there is none totally there as far as I can tell. But this is just a hunch and for all we know he could be a sound engineer too.
And oh by the way dreamaurora, are you going to perform anytime soon? Would love to see you play. -

for clarification, the above audio clip was done at my home on the yamaha c1 on a blue microphones YETI mic which was purchased to record my recordings. the reason why the recording sounds so clear is due to the mic which is NOT your normal microphone. It has 2 transducers inside with a proper selection of recording modes like cardoid, stereo and omni modes. The mic was connected to an apple macbook and the audio recorded via garage band. i have the raw garage band file if any of you need clarification.
you do not need a recording studio for a clean recording. all you need is to draw the curtains and close all doors in the house.

Iโm looking for a piano teacher for my 7 year old son. Currently, heโs taking the Yamaha JXC course, and due to his high level of interest in playing the piano, my husband and I think we may as well start him with individual lessons as well.
We stay in the Mountbatten area but do go to Parkway Parade / Parkway Centre frequently. Does anyone have any piano teacher you would highly recommend at any of the piano schools at Parkway Parade or Parkway Centre?
Thanks in advance!
