I have the same problem like you guys ....my girl like to use her cellphone and go to facebook...lucky me, she not ''glued'' to Japanese or Korean drama......For cellphone and facebook.....I won't try to block it or confiscate it.....Sometime, trying to control too much will lead to rebellion...I think is better trying to talk sense into them....not easy but we need to try...strike a deal with them...after homework or revision...they can have sometime on laptop for game and facebook. So far, it works for me...Remember we are not in the olden days ...control and confiscate item will not help much....surely you won't want her to feel left out by her classmate when coming to know the latest info...facebook is a form of team bonding for these young generation too.... just my opinion. -

u are not alone. facebook is very addictive. had so much Problems with dd over her online activities. realised that my dd is not disciplined enough to manage her facebook activities. so we came to agreement I will control her fb password. she has to ask for permission to use fb. much resistance in the beginning but over time, she got over urge to use fb. she lets her classmates know any impt msg must be communicated to her viasms because she is not active in fb. she has also come to realise she has a lot more time to study without the distractions of fb.
this method should not be employed unless necessary. we did go through a tough period of time setting things in place. afterall this is also the teenage years. lots of angst. -

We might have recently gotten a 9 A scorer in the A levels, but don’t rest easy on those laurels. Good grades might just get more difficult to achieve in the near future.
A study published in the journal Computers & Education asked 1,624 university students about their multitasking habits, and included questions on how often they used instant messaging, email, internet search and talked on the phone during study time. Those who mentioned using Facebook and text/sms the most had the lowest GPAs.
And just who are we letting go online and have Facebook accounts, at increasingly earlier ages…?

Many Silicon Valley executives are choosing to send their children to schools that ban technology. Where Singapore is attempting to introduce more IT into the education system, the people who actually make the technology are shunning it.
It’s been suggested that the over-stimulation and instantaneous access of technology nowadays can actually damage a child’s developing mind. While industry opinions are divided on this issue, there are certain irrefutable points.
A technologist at Hewlett-Packard argues that “short attention spans resulting from quick interactions will be detrimental to focusing on the harder problems.”
There are also those who feel that over-reliance on the Internet could rob youth of independent minds. This makes for a frightening future, according to Paul Gardner-Stephen of Flinders University.
“The underlying issue is that they will become dependent on the Internet in order to solve problems and conduct their personal, professional and civic lives,” he said.
Will our spoonfed generation end up even more helpless when cut off from the nurturing arms of their iPads, iPhones and the like?
This is a future that could potentially be Singapore’s. When children get introduced to iPhones and iPads from as young as age 1, their reliance on these products could very well develop into a lifelong one. Schools already employ IT and assorted technology in their lessons, albeit rather outdated ones. And don’t forget, children have no escape from the clutches of their smartphones!
So if you’re a kiasu parent, or know anyone who is one, let them know about the dangers of over-exposing children to technology. If you don’t, those nine As are going to be pretty hard to come by… -

Thank you so much to zeemimi and rich dad poor dad for your advice and comforting words. I have tried both soft and hard method as mentioned by you guys. Like giving her 30 mins everyday after dinner to get connected and updated with her friends on fb. But it did not work. She still has the temptation to switch to fb or youtube when doing her online homework. Initially, I was also in control of her fb password, however, I gave up half way cos she would always find excuses to log on to fb to get info or project discussion ( don't understand why they cannot call each other on the phone) from classmates and thereafter she deliberately did not log off and I too forgot about it. I have done everything that i could help her to get distracted from fb , it is up to her whether she has the determination to focus on her studies. Everyday I am hoping that she would become more sensible and motivated in her studies.daranic and bestmark

hi...i'm not a parent but i realised that your daughter seems to be me o.o i am almost totally like your daughter. i even dislike my math teacher. anw, i was addicted too but i realised that facebook was causing me to not be able to finish up my homework. so i asked my father to help me block facebook on my laptop. he disabled javascript for my internet explorer browser so now i am able to go to the facebook website but cannot log in. you can try doing that too or maybe you can go to this site: http://www.hidetools.com/how-to-block-facebook.html idk if it will work but it's worth a try. btw, you have to disable facebook in all the browsers that you use (eg. google chrome) so it will work properly. however although i now have no access to facebook on my laptop or phone my father lets me log in on weekends because he knows i still need my 'freedom'. ^^

You are definitely very sensible. i bet your parents must be very happy when you volunteered to block your fb account. Hope that one day my DD will realise that addicted to fb is affecting her studies and whatever I am doing now is for her good. I will try the method you recommend, hopefully it works.FYI I m not an unreasonable parent, I still allow her to use her hp to access fb everyday so long as she is not spending too time on it like secretly switching to fb even when she is doing her online homework.Btw, are you also in sec 1. -

My school uses MacBooks too and I must say its a real distraction. Whats more, I’m Sec 3. Such 1 to 1 programs are not so beneficial after all.
