Hi, I received many PMs regarding how to enrol 2 levels up, so I guess I shall post my reply here

I simply walked in to one of those no brand RC centers at a nearby hdb void deck to enquire. The center staff allowed my dd to sit for a test paper 2 levels up to assess readiness. Subsequently they said ok to join, even though my dd didn’t even complete the test paper within stipulated time.

That RC tuition class standard is not very high, I heard most kids scoring around low band 2 to band 3, which is fine since it’s just for additional exposure and it’s already 2 levels up anyway. Class is always full though, with around 15 to 16 kids

You might want to try those similar centers around your neighbourhood

By the way, I’m not suggesting to skip levels. Just sharing my ‘cheaper alternative’ as I gathered from reading earlier posts about expensive centers offering advanced learning. I believe parents know their own child best, whether he or she is ready for & keen in advanced learning

I noticed that there are many primary school kids who are weak in Maths are generally weak in numbers, ie addition and multiplication. Kids who are weak in P1/P2 will lose confidence later and will become weaker when they are in P3-P6.

Parents have to monitor their children to see their number skills. They should start them from young so that they will not lose interest in Maths at the later stage, which is the most important subject after English (compulsory subject up to sec 4).

Abacus will be a good start for pre-school and Sakamoto Method will be good for P3-P6 compared to other enrichment classes as their fees are low and highly affordable.

Based on my understanding, Sakamoto Maths differs in the Model Teaching Approach in Singapore schools. They might look the same but the approach is different. Hence, when placed in the shoes of a young child, the different approaches might lead to greater confusion.

Dear mummies… any recommendation for P1 Math enrichment around Choa Chu Kang? The more ‘branded’ ones are all so far away. Considering My Think Tank & Seriously Addictive Maths. Anyone can share their experiences with me?

              TIA!!

Hi, can i check if any mummies enrolled their pri school kids (P2 onwards) in KUMON?

I understand KUMON is not exactly align to MOE syllabus but just wanted to know if it is somewhat useful and applicable in the long-term as KUMON trains speed and accuracy.

I was told by an experienced mummy that lemon makes the kid repeat until he can get the answers fast and correct. As a result I haven’t explored that. My kid still uses fingers to count, but I rather he spend more time learning concepts and heuristic than being faster than a calculator - same reasoning why I chose not to send them for mental arithmetic.

This is my uninformed view. Pls feel free to overturn my assumptions. 🙂

                    Hi hquek! 😄

I also thot Kumon may not be useful for mid-higher pri kids as they do not explain concepts to the kids or teach modelling (which is a key to their problem sums now) ..and esp how the current pri sch syllabus are so into heuristics kind of problems.
So I am pretty curious if there are any kids (P3 onwards) out there taking Kumon and finding it still relevant & useful.
Actually my DS has been taking Kumon since K1 and I wanted to stop him but he did not want to.. He is doing sums that are higher level but I dont thk he actually knows the concepts behind the calculations (eg fractions).

Hi, my P2 girl has been faring poorly in her maths papers since she started primary school. I’ve tried enrolling her in the nearby rc maths tuition last year. Not much improvement after one year, so I withdrew her and placed her in mpm. Quite mixed feelings really. So far, her maths results are not improving. But I can clearly see improvement in her self discipline. I also discovered over the past few months that her problem sums are really the "problem" areas. She can do the arithmetic calculations just fine. Her mastery of the multiplication tables are good also. Just cannot break down the problems… I’m still observing her progress under mpm, but also interested to find out whether there are programs that emphasize on problem sum analysis. Hope to hear your suggestions… Thanks… 🙂
