How many men were there at the park?

let x be no. of women, so 4x men

12 (x- 16) = 4x

x = 24

4x = 96 men



*i am always confused by the words 'more than' and ' as many as'...

in this case, more than should mean

men : women
13:1 ???

but using this gives me a decimal point... thats weird..

so in the end i had to use 12:1.

perhaps someone else might have a clearer picture

Actually if you changed all the x to units, then you have your modeling answer.

If you take it away all together, you have your ratio answer.

Guess n check is not something I recommend. But it might help ur child have a good feel of the question.

So I want a number that after taking away 16 from the right, we have a ratio of 12:1

So start scaling the ratio

12:3
24:6

96:24 ah ha!

Which gives me 96:8 = 12:1

So the men is 96

May I know the source of the question ? I wonder what the setter is trying to do - to test the child's mathematical skills or trying to trip the child with ambiguous statements.

I would interpret as:
- 4 times as many men than women --> Number of men is 5 times number of women. Grammatically, it should read as \"number of men is 4 times more than\"..
- number of men is 12 times more than women --> Number of men is 13 times number of women.

Michelle went shopping and spent $225 on a watch. She used 5/6 of her remaining money to buy a dress. She was then left with 2/15 of her initial amount of money. How much money did she have at first?

5/6 of remaining spent on dress is 10u out of 15u
so, watch takes up 3u —> 225
1u —> 225/3 = 75
amount of money at 1st is 15u —>75x15=$1125

or can be 225 x 5 = $1125

If you 1+2+3+...+14=91
So answer 14.
I bet P4 doesn learnt algebra so cannot (n+1)+(n+2)+...
