May not be that bad in pri sch. I find so far my boy's pri sch experience has been pretty ok. Kindy teachers aren't as trained and they don't have the support.
      Mashy,

Based on this statement, I confirmed dun want to delay my kid for primary 1 enrollment. I think you are right, kindy teachers arent train. I think my boy will be better supported when he go P1.

At the end of the year, kkh rehab does a sch readiness prog. U can check it out. Maybe leave your name or something to show your interest. It's to teach the kids what to expect in pri sch and the therapists will try out strategies to see what works for your kid in a sch setting. Like getting them to concentrate on their task, do show and tell, taking turns, handling money etc. I think it's pretty beneficial. This is classroom like group session with activities. After each session, The therapist will tell u the feedback and what skill they were teaching that day. The therapists at rehab side are rather nice. I have gone thru a few already and none has said anything mean. At the end of the sessions, they will write a report which u can give to the teacher or bring up certain parts on how to help your child in sch.
My kid is in the EIPIC. Once in EIPIC, dunno if such KKH rehab classess will be made available to me or not. Cos they say the EIPIC centre will need to take care of all the needs of my son.

The therapists at rehab and child dev don't talk to each other. They are separate departments and they keep separate files. They will have absolutely no idea even if u go to rehab centre to do your therapies or anything else. So go. If u are seeing any other dr in kkh (not child dev), u can get a referral to go rehab. If not, just go in as private patient.

I realize that when I went to the child dev and they have absolutely no idea that we were ever in rehab. They couldn't check past dev becoz they have no access to the files. So don't worry about eipic going to be your stumbling stone. 🙂

            Hi mashy,

I agree with you to a certain extend except for the "acceptance" bit. It is not that I do not want to face or do not want to accept. It is just that I am not convinced. I will accept when I am convinced.

For eg. most of what my MIL was alarmed about last time, my boy has already outgrown. Things like he was spinning around at one stage but I told her that was because he was watching one episode of Barney whereby the children was spinning around and looking up to the sky. But I have always told my PIL that my boy has speech problems and he has a fierce temper. They were not convinced about this until my boy threw such a terrible tandrum they have to backoff. Now they are handling him with kids glove. The other extreme which also drive me nuts sometimes…

Recently I brought him to a new ST. This new ST asked whether there is any diagnosis? I told her yes, preliminary ASD. Then she work a while with my boy and when my boy looked at her in the eyes and smiled, she turn to me and said "But he has good eye contact?". So I said yes, that’s why I said "preliminary" lor but also he obviously has speech-delay and couple of other issues otherwise we won’t be here discussing.

So yes and no, I will agree to some and disagree to others.

Same! My boy also has the same sweet temper as yours. 🙂

Mine is in the same group as you both. Too sweet temper. Even being pushed at playground also wont fight back. I really worry he get bully when he go mainstream.

I guess at some point we also need to learn how to let go.

cannot, cannot, have this sweet temper, mus be like Temple Grandin, she fight back... in this society, cannot have sweet temper. tis will consider has being easily get bullied 😞

hi, I am not a parent of an autistic child but I volunteer at church to teach catechism - and I 30 children 2 of whom are autistic. Any tips on how I may engage them without neglecting the others. I have co-volunteers so we could split the attention but don’t want to make them feel they are being treated differently. They are P3 kids and wonderful boys.

I think you can buy from Amazon. That's what i intend to do so.

Thanks. I think I will do the same

Speaking about the professional assessment. I can't remember if I share this before. I sent my boy to KKH for psychological assessment, which is required for Pathlight enrollment. My boy wasn't in a good mood, plus he was a bit under the weather, therefore didn't perform that well. The psychologist just add up the score and said he isn't qualified for Pathlight, we should send him to ASPN instead. I blur blur, went ahead to collect the ASPN registration form. It is only later when I went check out the ASPN curriculum then I realize something not quite right, as the curriculum doesn't quite match his ability. I was about to look for a private psychologist for 2nd opinion, when the KKH psychologist called me in the afternoon and told me she made a mistake in the scores. His actual scores qualified him for Pathlight (anyway, we still missed the chance to enrol him to Pathlight due to some other silly mistake made by KKH CDC, who submitted the application on our behalf)

Well, at least she bother to check her work. Thinking about it, if I followed the experts' opinion blindly, will I end up depriving my boy to develop his potential fully?

Actually some non autistic kids line things up and spin stuff too. But they stopped after a short while. No obsession with it I guess. If all who spin and line things up are autistic, then many boys are. Lol.

Why did u decide to send him for assessment? Surely there's something bothering you. If it didn't bother u a bit or makes you suspect somethg, you wouldn't have. Since my kid was 8-9 mths, I already thought something was going on. He lined things up everywhere and spins toys all the time. He wasn't interested in playing toys as he was spinning container covers, trays and plates. Everyone told me he is fine. I am the one who felt something wasn't right. Hehe. But now I think he's progressing well and starting to feel almost like a normal kid already. Kind of funny that I got the assessment only after he had gotten rid of most of the autistic habits.

As for th 'experts', I've been pretty lucky. Guess also due to the late assessment. No OT or ST said anything other than focusing on improving his weaknesses, be it fine more skills, stuttering or articulation. No one sugg he goes to special needs school. Maybe that is the good thing about being in the rehab section rather than child dev. Rehab just wants to improve skills and help them get better. 🙂
