Learning the tingxie is a waste of time !!! This Fri, he will be tested for last week's (no time last week) and this week's. I believe he should get quality work done. Can you advise how I can get him out of learning/doing inappropriate school work ? Thanks.

Ehhhhh... learning tingxie is not a waste of time lah... it's just that the school (like for compo... and for compre... and for Math practice... and for Science practice) cannot give enough volume to make learning worthwhile. At home, DS has to tingxie 16 expressions everyday for 3 days in a week, and then another 16 expressions for the next 3 days. This way, he cycles through 32 expressions in one week.

Inappropriate Homework
(1) Sit down with DS and decide what homework is a waste of time.
(2) Email or write an excuse. Teachers are understanding generally. They are helpless within a system that doesn't really facilitate their teaching but expects them to be good and to do everything from write notes and teach large classes. Explain to Teacher that your DS is stressed out... sleeps late... etc...
(3) Teachers will complain. Meanwhile, you work hard at helping your son.
(4) Once your son improves, Teachers generally back off. After all, your DS has improved... and it saves them the time from marking more work.

He has difficulty learning English phrases bcos of having to fulfil school obligations.

Does your child's school still giving homework for Music, Social Studies, Art & HealthEd? Mine does and I have been doing it for DD since the beginning of this year. I don't understand why the school is so 'ON' on these subjects this year!!

Hi underthesea,

Yes, my DD school still gives hw for Social studies and Art ... need to do research work for Social studies too ! :slapshead:

I totally agree about not doing inappropriate homework. I must confess that I often help my daughter do the homework I consider a waste of time so she can finish it faster, or I show her shortcuts, and then we can focus on work that actually adds value.
I am so lousy at all his subjects that I can't help!

And I  the way you put that bit in red!!
slmkhoo:
What does puzzle me, is why school homework is seen to be not a part of revision? If it helps the child learn, I would count it as revision. Perhaps the work required up to T2 in P6 is different in quality, because when my daughter was in P6 (T3 onwards), I found that most of the work was quite directly related to PSLE, and I would adjust what I assigned to take that into account. Eg. if her school homework was to do an English and a Math paper, I wouldn't ask her to any more English and Math that day.
You are right here... I am beginning to notice that the incidence of inappropriate homework is steadily reducing. I still think there will be some because the homework is not really customised to the child... but hmmmm... I won't know till we actually get to T3.

Keep my fingers crossed!! :xedfingers:

My son cried last night. Hubby was at a loss…Younger sister gave her brother a tissue paper. My heart ached.

From now, stuff inappropriate will either be done by hubby. I want my son to learn his work happily but the work must be of use. I am lousy where his work is concerned but I know what is value-added and what is mass production.
Hi Hi,

Can i check how many compositions your DD or DS has done in schools so far since school starts in Jan ? My DD so far only did 2 EL compo but has so far done 5 CL compo in class. For the second EL compo, the teacher has yet returned us ! :faint:

TIA

Hi fightingmom,

It's a norm in school, even top schools. My kid did one compo in term 1 and yet to see it. Probably wont get to see it.
So far none in term 2.

My goodness ! :yikes: Just 1 ?! :yikes: How is your child's coping? Is he/she good at writing ? My DD is rather weak in her English. 😓
My son is very lucky to be taught by the English HOD. He is given 2 compo in a month. Their teacher even typed & printed out those well written compo & distributed to the class. We got back every single compo with the teacher's comment. In fact, my boy has show great improvement after 1 term. Thanks to his English teacher. :rahrah:
