All About Music For Beginners & Selecting Instruments

im also interested in this thread. my DD will be turning 6 and I think she is old enough to study music. she wants to learn violin but i want her to study piano first. maybe because i think learning piano is easier? i really dont know too. hahaha.

im now currently googling for schools where they offer affordable lessons. might try out first for a few months.

Until mom bought me a piano for S$400 that i used for many years even until gr 8. I only bought a \"new\" (2nd lah) piano when I got married and was already working.

I remembered going to TJC for 3 months last time and every day I would go there extra early so I can practice some pieces I downloaded off Internet on one of the pianos in the lecture halls. When I started lessons in a music school slightly later, I saved up pocket money so I could rent a room to practice once every few days to practice. There was a time I simply stopped talking to my parents because they were so upset that I wanted to pursue music (they thought it was a very shameful profession for a male). So I kind of envy youngsters nowadays, so young already have the best instruments and teachers.

True. Learning piano is not easy and I tell people if they want a hobby they just can enjoy and relax, definitely don't pick up learning classical piano. The gain from learning piano is not that apparent. Practicing is often tedious and even one single piece may take months to master. But the satisfaction of finishing a piece is worth it and you can share your creation to the people around you.

My ds is currently in P5, he has a wide range of interests and are doing very well. He is strong in weiqi, table tennis and also has strong passion for music / piano. (Dreamaurora, I posted in "Piano Q&A" mentioning that he loves Joe Hisaishi’s music). He is going abrsm G6 this year. Recently, his piano teacher suggests that perhaps he can consider taking up another instrument since he loves music and learning very fast, wow, that got him real high and he said he wants to take up violin. I was very happy initially and agree upon, however, after some thoughts, I think that he may not have time if he wants to do all his interest well, and afterall, he also needs to take care of his studies well.
I told him my view and he said he will still do what he needs to do and he is very keen to learn. I feel bad that i have finally rejected him and told him that he should concentrate more on his studies etc.
I am still thinking about it although I have rejected him. I have no music background hence I really don’t know if he needs to spend a lot of time on violin. I also feel bad for denying him a chance to take up a new instrument. He is disappointment but not really really disappointment…so…
Can you kindly advise and share your thoughts?

Hmm, I think you can turn this into a win-win situation for him. If he wants to learn violin, why don't you ask him to try to enter a sec school with a string ensemble CCA? So if you start violin lesson for him he will be able to use it for his CCA.

Lived in subsidised quarters where my mum worked. Many with grown-up children who rarely used their piano anymore - some moved away already or studying overseas, and the mothers were housewives, so they happily let me go and play around on their piano. Not me who did the arrangements. Was my mom. ;D We had books passed down from their children too.
