An Indonesian man charged with paying for sex with an underage girl has been given permission by the court to return to his home country to get married.
According to a Straits Times report today, Reyner Desvando Suhartono, 28, will leave for Indonesia from Friday to April 29 and May 16 to June 6 for his June 2 wedding. His lawyer, Mr Edmond Pereira, told the court that Mr Suhartono had made preparations for the wedding from November last year, even before he was called up by the police.
Mr Pereira said in court that his client, who is a director and shareholder of a four-year-old Singapore-registered trading company, is not a flight risk. He also owns a property here together with his father.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Andrew Tan objected to this, saying the suspect is a foreigner with no familial roots in Singapore, will be married to a non-Singaporean, and is only a minority shareholder in the company, reported the paper.
District Judge Lim Tse Haw, in allowing Mr Suhartono to leave, set a cash bail of $20,000 to be posted as well as a stipulation that he must provide his itinerary and overseas contact details to the investigating officer before he leaves the country.
The prosecution set forth an amended charge today naming the underage girl, whom Mr Suhartono allegedly had sex with at his rented apartment in Cambridge Road for $450 in September 2010.
It is against the law to have paid sex with a person under 18.
Understand Edmond Pereira has to do what he is paid to do,
but does he REALLY believe his client is not a flight risk?
Dis offence carries a mandatory jail term.
$20K bail is cheap. -

Sex with a minor below 16 is illegal regardless whether there is consent. If 16 and 7 months before 17 how??

This post made me cheer up a bit, otherwise feel very uncomfortable with the way the world is out there now. At least there are still like minded people around. And i have four kids to worry for.

Whilst I understand that this whole age thing is to protect the young, how young is too young? why is 18 the magic number? are we all very mature at 18?
This whole sorry saga has got me thinking of something else. These 48 men were charged because the girl was 17. Amongst them are men we work with, men we went to school with, men we might know some way or another, whom we'd never have expected to use such services.
How many many more must there be, how much wider must the total clientele be, of paid sex services? For all you know, every X out of 10 men we know use such services. Harrowing.
I understand that prostitution is legal, it's the oldest profession, etc. But by taking a blase stance of condonement (?), is this where we want our society to go? for our husbands, fathers, brothers, sons to have ready access and an ever growing pool of prostitutes to choose from, simply because we deem there nothing wrong whatsoever with prostitution?
That it exists, is reflection of the state of man (generically, to include women, not flogging men per se). I wouldn't laud it as something as acceptable and worth defending as the next profession.
