While these real victims (the wives) stand by their man n slowly relearn how to rebuild their family, they need lots of emotional support. My heart goes to the the families of the men especially the wife - how shattering it must be.

Even the men have to face the fact that they have betrayed their wife, they have caused so much humiliation to their loved ones, they have their life shattered - and they have only themselves to blame. It takes great strength to rebuild from there . I am not sure many can make it thru.

That is why I do admire the grith of the ex-principal. To fall and then pick onself is a great task...

Yes the age 18 is a number. Do all attain mental maturity at that age? - no, I even know adults in their 30s who are so immature., and teens who are far more astute and mature.
But the fact in most countries this is taken to be the age when one can be assumed to have reasonable amount of maturity.
Below that age, the benefit of doubt should be given to the child.
The point is if the court feels that she was matured enough to have thought this thru and did it with her eyes open,
then actually it is stating that she is not underaged. So the whole case closed. For prostitution is legally allowed.

On the other end
Did any of the men think thru to the end - no?
Yes they might have been told the girl was 18 or above. A 16 year old might look like an 18 year old , but Did they truly not suspect?
did they not have a doubt niggling their head ?
Wisdom tells me they probably did but thought that it really didnt matter
- after all this was hush hush set up and not a case of them intentionally misleading an underaged.
It just boils down to the fact that they thought they would not be caught.

That is precisely why the onus is on the man to find out , because its just too easy to close one eye

I agree largely with Sun_2010. She is 17. We have all done stupid things at 17, 18 & 19, etc. It's just that our acts were either not illegal or we didn't get caught. Even if she is now a money-grubbing, opportunistic being, she should be given the opportunity to change. Or not. That is her choice. To make her identity known like that drastically reduces her chances of turning around because she will be KNOWN on Singapore shores and beyond as the underaged prostitute. What are her options after this?

I think the online community should have respected the gag order not for her sake per se, but because it protects the rights of a child as defined as the law. If she comes of age and decides to carry on with her current profession and the news breaks then, so be it. But before that, I think we should think about rehabilitation rather than blame. Girls from all kinds of backgrounds go into prostitution. Even if it is for sheer greed and to buy that Prada handbag or they come from good, wealthy families and want some thrill in their lives, it doesn't mean they don't have a problem. They just have different kinds of problems which need working out. I hope she is not suicidal. Singapore is a very small island. I doubt she is able to just pack up and go abroad for a few years to weather the storm.

I hafta agree with 3Boys that young girls these days aren't as innocent we think they are. Not all of course. Just overheard some girls from a reputable n hottest school in CCK discussing which girl had done it with whom and it is common knowledge amongst them, schoolmates! :faint: They should be around P5/P6! Before we left to take the bus, heard one girl calling her mom saying she's going home to study and sleep and told her mommy to wake her up for dinner. No, I bet the mother doesn't know.

Yes girls are not so innocent physically but they are emotionally. Today they have greater access , freedom , and less supervision - all the more reason that they need protection by law.

The girls mentioned - did they have the maturity to think thru their act?
Do they know who is the one who is truly going to be hurt in the end?
They think they are smart - can fool mum, they are cool - can do adult stuff, they think they are brave beause they dare - but DO they do they really realise what they are upto ? I dont think so .

If some men decide to take advantage of them - how easy , just how easy it would be? especially if there were no onus on the men.

You know, I regret checking out her identity. I admit, I didn’t think of her as a person. It was the kaypoh-ness in me rising up. I didn’t check out the Edison Chen et al photos when the news broke because I thought i didn’t want to be a part of that circus and humiliate the women involved further. Next time, I will think a lot harder before accessing some news. For all her wrongdoings, she is a person, and she’s probably freaked out right now.


Ok, this is quite maudlin, but if she ever reads this, I would like her to know this: you can still change. All hope is not lost. Face the consequences of your actions and go on to live an honourable life. It is difficult but it can be done! I, for one, no longer condemn you and I believe you can change.
