2009 GEP Screening And Selection

The breifing last nite was reassuring and answered most of the parents' concerns.


This morn, I brot dd to Rosyth Pri for a guided tour. after the session, dd is very convinced she shd join Rosyth. I am not sure if she will chg her mind again (she was delighted to find out the sch has a compulsory manga course ... ya a very odd reason to want to join the sch, but dd loves manga and anime)

Is there any parent here with GEP kid(s) from Rosyth. Wld appreciate it if you cld elaborate abt Rosyth's culture and the teachers there.

My only grouse abt Rosyth is the physical structure of the bldg is unappealing (very old ... thk it used to be a carpark?)

My DD only indicated one choice on the form.
She is being influenced by her friend cos her friend's brother was given 2nd choice abt 3 years ago.

So now they do not want to repeat the 'mistake' again.

this is a good advice

not allways true. I Friend's DD also put the school of choice but was given another which they didnt even think so. so it happens only if you have vacancy :x

Newbie here. I am still trying to decide on which GEP school to send my dd to. My ds is in NYPS P5 this year. However, the thing that is bugging me is this: when I attended the NYPS briefing for GEP parents 2 years ago, a mother sitting next to me asked me why I had not sent my child to RGPS. Before I could tell her that my child was a boy, she went on to say that the GEP teachers at RGPS are very caring, quite unlike the teachers at NYPS.

Is it true that the teachers at NYPS are not as caring? Do they expect the GEP kids to still be sent for tuition/ enrichment and therefore the teachers do not need to provide as much guidance?

There is not a fair statement to conclude tt of NYPS because of some unpleasant encounters by some parents. Just like all other schs, there is a diverse group of individuals who comprise the teaching staff, nurturing or otherwise, sunny or grouchy.

My DS' experiences hv largely been positive. Teachers give me an impression of being genuinely concerned with student welfare and progress. Of course, some are sterner than others. But on the whole, no different from his old pri sch.

On the other hand, I hv heard negative feedback abt other GEP schs w/c i shan't name as I did not personally experience it. These feedback guided us to opt for NYPS and we hv absolutely no regrets so far.

please dont get misguided as gladtobemom says. each one have their own exoerience with the school . just talk to the school directly sure they will help you address the concerns. every one in a school is there to help you but the approach might be different . GEP in all schools are same . It is diff as said in the talk, they are teaching to be individual .

My dd's school only have awards for top 10 in standard & top in subject, model student, best improvements. Not aware there's awards for top 3 in each class. Usually the top 10 will be among the top in their respective classe too, some also top certain subject. The same child goes on stage a few times

in SVPA we have top 10 and top 3 and even awards for the best documentaries the children do..

:celebrate: Drink to it. Don't think you will not get into HPPS, they seems to be always \"under-subscribe\". :welcome: And I don't remember they have any clause for you to opt-out. HPPS was our only choice as well, and we were thinking the same thing last year, die die must go there.

Ha Ha my choice too. because for me is NONSAP school and the only choice near my house . off course since they ask to put atleast 2 . I added Rosyth. I dont want to fight with later be behind. :idea:

For those who choose to stay back in currentl gep school do the pupils from the same school fall in the same class?

I think yes. thats what I heard from St. Hilda's booth.

My son has not been doing too well so far. He is always below average in Science, Maths and Chinese; slightly above average in English and near the top in Social Studies :roll:
So, now that my daughter has got into the GEP, I am finding it difficult to make a decision on the choice of school. Is it true that the GEP teachers at RGPS are very caring? Would it make a difference in my dd's academic performance and in getting help with projects etc.?
I went to the RGPS booth last night, but didn't attend the briefing. Did I miss out on anything?

my boss daughter was from RGPS GEP. According to him they are really caring and always when PSLE comes they are well prepared etc... but nothing special in QA session for RGPS as there was no specific question to the school.

Hi gladtobemom,

Yes, the GEP teachers at RGPS are very caring. I don't know how they compare to the teachers at NYPS because I'm not familiar with them. The times my dd has fallen ill and had to miss school, the teachers have always reassured me that health was most important and that we shouldn't worry about missed lessons and homework.

One thing that struck me was that the teachers always tell the students and parents that tuition and external enrichment was not necessary. Everything they need to know they will learn in school. For the weaker students, remedial classes will be conducted.

Having said that, RGPS GEP teachers expect a lot of their students. I say this because my dd has compared what they do at RGPS with some of her friends from another GEP school and they seem to cover less. The teachers have high standards and the girls do perform well generally.

Kind of worried..... I only put 1 choice for the paper, ACS (pri). What happens if u dont have place at the one school that u choose? Kindly advise! :?: :?
