It is not about the length of the composition. It is about how the story is developed. I have seen very good compositions which are only 1 and a half page long. I have also seen students writing 4 - 5 pages of compositions but they are filled with grammatical and spelling errors.

I would say generally, 2 pages should be quite sufficient to develop the story well. If it is less than that, the pupils might not write enough to describe the characters, their emotion and the actions that are taking place. If the pupil’s foundation in English is strong, he/she can write more. But if the pupil is just average, I would not encourage him/her to write too much as more errors would be made and they will be penalised for that under the Language component.

If your child is able to develop the story well and use vivid phrases to describe the characters and their actions, he/she shouldn’t have any problem getting a good score.

I agree with tutor ng. It's not really about the word limit, but most good students produce compositions that are slightly longer because they are able to develop the story more thoroughly and more detailed with better descriptions.

For me i have always been slightly more long-winded, my compos can be around 3 or 4 pages for chinese or around 4-6 pages for English but again that's just me. Some people manage to write good compos in just 2 pages.

Original Title: Pr 5 Maths and Science

                  Hi all,

My son is in Pr 5 this year and he scored only 60 plus for science and maths. He has maths tuition but not for science.

Can anyone please share views as to how i can help him improve his marks. PSLE is not far away and i am horrified!

Oh don't worry 😄 , I had Science tuition but scored a B (ahem! ahem!) for PSLE Science. :gloomy: :gloomy: :gloomy:

Anyway good luck for his PSLE next year! 🕺

                  🙏

Hello, my P5 boy urgently needs reinforcement for English in preparation for the PSLE; would anyone happen to have good English tuition teachers to recommend? It would be great if the teacher can teach in the Choa Chu Kang area, but it's alright if he/she can't too. I actually found two teachers in one of the forum threads- Serene Han and EffectiveTeacherTutor. However, they did not leave their contacts behind and I don't know how to contact them. I would appreciate any help!

                    Thanks a lot 🙂

Can advise how to improve the following:

                      - English Comprehension Close Passage;
                      - Science Open-Ended.

The PSLE is getting close, getting more worry. Please help.

                        Dear mummies and daddies,

I am an active reader and I thank all the parents for their candid response and sharing, it helps that I m not alone. 🙂

My eldest dd is taking her PSLE this yr and like some parents, I nearly faint when I saw her math result in P5. I realize the format is drastically different. My dd is an average student but she is certainly not borderline so imagine my dismay when she flunk her math paper. :gloomy:

A yr later and hopefully wiser, I have this to share...... last yr, I came to this forum to look for a math tutor. I found one who came highly recommended. My lesson - what works for others may not work for you. I discipline my children, but I draw a line with tutors who are out to belittle and crush their confidence. :heresmyfish:

Luckily, my mother-in-law gave me some good advice, a year later, my dd has improved 2 folds - though it is not the ideal goal we set her yet but she is more confident and is a happier child. All this without a tutor.

So don't let the tutor tell you what yr child can or cannot do. Don't subject yr child to entrance tests set by those silly education centers. Understand yr child weak points, language is about reading. Once, an expat native teacher told me, the one way to improve English is reading, reading and reading. I am terrible with Chinese but for my child's sake, I learnt and we make an effort to spend 1 hr everyday in that language whether to read, write or listen. After 2 yrs, she actually score second highest ranking in her oral score, doesn't hate the subject and even joked with her Chinese teacher in mandarin. So for English, make an effort to read with yr child, newspaper is ideal to start with for P6..... Though I found mistakes! its helps with cloze passage, comprehension and vocab. Science section B is about key words. Every experiment is to determine that one factor - yr child needs to identify that impt pt. Is it abt air occupy space? Strength of magnets? Etc... I let my child chk the answer as they do so they understand what is the key word.

Even if u sent yr kids to tuition, dont rely solely on them. U r your kids best guidance as u know them best.

PSLE is important but it should not define our child's future. I like the logo of ACS - the best is yet to be. So parents, cheer up, chill, educate and remember to have fun! :imcool:

Sorry for the long sharing, hope it helps some parents out there! 😄
