mummy so kiasu:
If my son only does school homework, he will spend a long time doing easy work... and then he will fail his exams because his exams are way more difficult than his homework.I have not try calling or sending email to teachers, even though he has to his homework till 11pm most of the days. I prefer my boy to learn how to manage his time properly. I have checked with his classmates and all of them clear their homework on a daily basis. By not handing up homework on time, might lead to teacher' complaints or a lot of back logs to clear.
Maybe, I do not want to give my son the wrong impression that mummy will call or email teacher if I don't do my homework. They will have more subjects & more homework when they go to Sec next year. Learning how to manage their time is important. I will not give him extra work to do due to his school workload. Just expect his to produce quality work. -

He didn't manage to finish one bit and I sent him to bed at 10.30pm. A record breaking time since 9.30 is the usual bed time.
My children's usual bed time is 9.30pm too! They came home yesterday telling me that their P. spoke to them about time management and mentioned that 9.30pm is too early for sleeping time, 10.30pm is ok. But then, not all children stays near the school. My kids wakes up at 5.30am.
If they have too much homework and it stretches till past 9.30pm, you can see that they are working at a much slower pace (brain power slow down!). Sometimes no choice need to wake them up at 4.30am to get work done. Luckily this is not happening often, but they have to sacrifice play / reading time in order to finish hw before bedtime.
What makes me angry is that after completing the hw, it is not collected the next day. :stompfeet: Worst still, ds forgot to hand up hw and ended up with a 'late' remark written on it! :slapshead:
But I am amazed that dd's friend slept after 11pm and does her hw while watching drama on tv. -
Teachers often give homework to be submitted the next day or without informing dateline. Without dateline, most students will try to finish the homework on the same day to avoid scolding. Sometimes, I found the homework not collected for days after dc spending late night to finish it. If the school wants the student to learn time management, teachers should give homework with longer dateline. How could students learn to plan or manage the time if all or most homework have to be submitted the next day?
There is also a problem of homework distribution. There are days when there is no homework but some days with lots of them especially before exams. Teachers should communicate (e.g. list the homework on the board) to avoid giving out too much homework at the same time. -
For DD, she prepares 2 files herself - those homework to be handed in by tomorrow will be collected into the first file. Homework with a later dateline, she will use a pencil to do a quick note at the top of the page to indicate the date before she put it into the 2nd file. That way, she will not forget or get overwhelmed when she sees all the homework.

I’ve noticed a spike in the amount of homework recently too, especially in terms of practice papers. I’m glad, cos it’s like forced revision for SA1/PSLE.
The only grouch is that I wish there’s better communication between the 4 different subject teachers so that worksheets are staggered. There are days whereby there’s homework for ALL subjects, and they are all due the next day. I sometimes look through dd’s homework and the quality of work (esp for sections like Science OE or Chinese compre OE) on these days is honestly not great. I don’t have the heart to ask her to refine/amend though, as she’s already burning the midnight oil trying to get her work completed, and she has to wake up at 5.30am.
Personally, I would have preferred a steady stream of evenly-spaced out homework, so that they have time to mull over the answers a bit, rather than have everything shoved down their throats all at once. I sincerely doubt if everything can be digested.
But I guess it can’t be helped as everyone is in "War" mode right now… -
If school gives past year paper, it is not a waste of time doing…the prob is when to get them done, and whether teachers give correct answers and explain them in OE section. This week, the kids are having Oral. Btw, oral exams have to be prepared, not just sit there and yak whatever comes to mind.
Honestly, kids should NOT be given any hw these 2 weeks.
Right now, it’s whether which is more important - time management or getting homework done ???
Some kids do not take naps in the afternoon, so by 930pm, it is understandable they are tired. -
Chenonceau:
If child does not get hw done, he/she will risk getting black-marked by teachers. But agree 100% that daily homework doesn't help kids pass these crazy exams. What's the point of getting them done ? It's a waste of time and def not time management.

If teachers want to give past year papers, can they coordinate with one another NOT to pile on at one go ? :siao: 4 subjects leh. -

I am thinking of narrowing down some topics for conversation and picture conversation to practise during June holidays. Does anyone here know of past years’ topics (Eng Or Chinese) or is there a thread with topics listed? Thanks -

Every child is diffrent. My DD has no problem staying late when she was in p6 but my DS now tries very hard to stay up will 10pm but will wake up with puffy eye bag and dark ring around his eyes. Some studies very well at night and some more productive in the morning.fifiyeo:

I feel best not to compare what others are doing but rather find a way that best suites them. :xedfingers:
