and it's not like we're surrounded by unfriendlies

What on earth gives you that impression? We are absolutely surrounded by unfriendlies. They are only 'friendly' because we are economically and militarily strong.

it they all spit at the little red dot at the same time, it will be a tsunami ....

NS is essential to have for our country. What we really need is good medical help for crisis management. Sometimes, some conditions are underestimated especially if the medics are NSmen themselves. There should be a professional medical team to look after them. As for dying from pneumonia, clearly it is usually a case of late diagnosis and pneumonia is dangerous so help is definitely required early.

              ksi, long time no see.

I personally hv an experience of an indifferent MO.
After waiting for a substantial time for my turn to see d MO,
he continued reading a book while I related to him my medical history related to an injury.
He then proceeded to write an MC (I think) without any physical examination.
That was it. When d medic gave me a MC for light duties n to report back in 3 months,
I immediately asked for d MO’s name with d intention to report him,
but d medic pacified me n refused to provide d MO’s name.
On recalling dis now, I am tinged with regret dat I didn’t pursue d matter with MINDEF at dat time.
I went thro dis charade, though with different MO each time, two n three times,
before someone advised me to see a specialist to certify my injury for downgrading.
It was a real waste of time.
wat dat MO did leaves d impression dat he was going thro' motion,
without paying any attention to d details of each case.

I hv good memories of my time in NSF, n wld encourage my boys, without hesitation,

to put in their best when their time comes for their rite of passage n try to make d best of it.

NS is still necessary to give us d numbers to sustain a credible fighting force.
We r now inducting ard 20,000+ males a year into NSF – dat’s only abt 2 Divisions strength spread into d three arms, not including SCDF. 2 Divisions r insufficient to defend d island n project its defence beyond its shores.

Thus I understand d need to continue NS cycle beyond NSF,
both for maintaining sufficient force levels n for continuing training/upgrading of reservists.
However, d ICT cycle also disadvantages d NSmen in their careers (except for civil servants, which can be a plus)
n whilst more has been done to address dis, it will continue to be a contentious issue.

I thot it a half-baked silly notion when someone here said NS (contributing to a strong SAF) acts as a deterrence.
IMV, having a strategic nuclear submarine with first-strike nuclear capability lurking unknown in depths is a deterrent, not a SAF without strategic depth.
SG can never withstand a full scale military onslaught by a major military power in a conventional war.
SAF is at most a holding force, albeit relatively stronger than other regional armies, while waiting for allied reinforcements for its continued survival.
Therefore, d first n foremost defence is still good diplomacy.
SG continue to exist if we stay relevant in geo-politics. D red dot flourishes in a sea of green coz the neighbours haven’t got their act together yet.

SG became a logistical base (officially) for d US navy 7th Fleet since d 1990 MOU
                - dis includes d nuclear-powered aircraft carrier n nuclear submarines.
d nuclear assets will be key targets in d ops plan of contending armies in war.
Wat’s d biggest threat for SG now?
IMV, not d neighbouring armies, but terrorism n sabotage
                - both fr Islamic radicals n SG getting caught up in a wider conflict involving d major powers eg US vs China.

maybe the book he was reading could be a medical journal or reference book to find a proper definition of the injury

No. Medics must attend a medic course n pass before joining units.
MOs r qualified docs. (most fresh fr school).
