i started to coach my girl but ended up very very angry with her "attitude" . she does not seem interested, looked like being "forced" to learn and i have to "threaten" that i need to send her back to tuition class ( which she dislike) as our arguings and my nagging will seriously affect our relationships .

I agreed "patience " is indeed very important…

In fact, I am still unsure whether I should stop her maths tuition or not ! cos at least during the 1.5hr, she is being "locked" in the classroom instead of wasting time at home…

It is very common that parents find it very frustrating to teach an unwilling son/ daughter in assessment works. Schoolwork not so bad as they need to hand up completed homework to the teacher.

Should you pull your dd from the tuition class? Qn is whether the class tuition helps her or not? Above average kids are likely to benefit but below average kids are likely to learn little or none from class tuition. \"Locking\" her in the classroom is not only wasting her precious time there but also exasperate her if she is not benefitting from the tuition.

If your kid lacks learning skill, you just might have to spend more $ on One to One tuition. A child will be more willing to listen and learn from the tutor who is able to help the child understand and solve difficult qns.

May God bless you with wisdom and patience.

1) Above average kids are likely to benefit...
my girl does benefit from the practise paper that the centre provide, cos i will usually check thr n correct her while doing the tuition's hw HOWEVER, i m feeling \"heartpain\" as she need to do so many hw which include hw from her school, and the rushing of tuition classes after school.

2) \"Locking\" her in the classroom is not only wasting her precious time there but also exasperate her if she is not benefitting from the tuition....

if i dont send her for tuition, she will take her own sweet time and left us no time or no \"mood\" to work efficiently ......i m in a dilemma...

3)..you just might have to spend more $ on One to One tuition. A child will be more willing to listen and learn from the tutor who is able to help the child understand and solve difficult qns...

i totally agreed, but i have $ constraints
What kind of books are recommended to help kids who are average? My ds who is in P4 cannot cope with onsponge. But I heard that it is the best?

Like I share, Onsponge is suitable for students who can achieve band 1 result. But then some of the methods used by Onsponge are too 'chim' to understand when some easier methods can be used.
You may want to try \"Intensive Math's\" by EPH. It has three levels of difficulty to practice on. Obviously the third level is most difficult. You can see how far your child can cope. If ds can do well, Andrew Er's books will be the next level to try out.
God bless you ur ds.

I am using Intensive math's drill by EPH too and like the 3 levels of difficulty. it is much more managable than onsponge and yet still of some challenge for average kid at the level 3 section.

david59, which andrew er's book will you recommend?
Hi Jedamum,

Because of the three levels of difficulty, this book \" Intensive Mathematics\" is very suitable for kids at every level of competency except those who are consistently achieving 80 marks and above in Primary 5 and 6.

For those in Primary 5 n 6 whose scores are in the region of 75 to 85, Andrew Er's book \"Mathematics Companion\" is good practice.
For those who are scoring 85 and above and want to achieve A star, Andrew Er's book \" New Syllabus Mathematics is a really tough book to work on but very rewarding.

Parents who are very apt in Mathematics should be able to learn from the assessment books to teach their kids. Parents who are not so, they may be able to guide their child through Primary 3 n maybe 4 but primary 5 n 6's topics are really very difficult to follow through. The level of difficulty in problem sum questions are getting more and more difficult to do year after year.

Most importantly, there are a few methods to approach problem sums. Some children like one method more than the others. It is better to learn at least a few methods because certain questions are best solved easily by certain method. One of the methods that is gaining popularity uses a combination of model and simultaneous equations to solve. This method avoids the need to do dissecting the model up into many parts which can look rather messy.

God bless you with wisdom and patience as you quide your kids in their studies.

This is great that she is benefitting from the centre! I guess it is better for her to continue there then. Is she in Primary 5 or 6 now? Lots of homework from school is a norm; especially if she is in the top two classes. The kids can last through PSLE one lah.
They may grumble about the huge amount of works but before you know, PSLE is over and the kids will be over the moon liao. Every year I have seen my centre's students whining and whining about their workloads but all is well after they crossed past PSLE.

Good nite!

hi david59

my gal used to get 90-95 in p1p2. in p3 sa2 she got 82.
in p4 ca1 she got 65, mostly due to lack of speed and carelessness and prob lack of practice cos ca1 was in feb, very fast.

whc andrew er bk will u recom?

she didnt hv math tuition in p1p2 but in p3 had tuition in just prob sums.
in p4 i pull her out partly cant match schedule and partly i find her specific weakness not addressed by tutor. i teach better.

i am not fantastic in math but i learn as i teach. not sure if i can do it in p5. but i m teaching cos i realised i can spot her specific weaknesses better.
tutors will just gv answer but dont tell the child why her method is inefficient.

I can understand how you feel to a certain extent. That is why I usually emphasize on the marks of Primary 5 n 6 because it is at this level that Maths gets really tougher for those who are aiming for band 1 or A star.

Like I share with Jedamum, Andrew Er's \"Mathematics Companion\" is easier than \"Mathematics New Syllabus\". You may want to start on the former first to gauge her level of capability. Place more emphasis on problem sums as I think your kid seems to be quite ok with basis concepts. Because from Primary 5 onwards, problem sums constitute 60 out of 100 marks and there are 18 qns compare to 4 in the lower primary.

God bless you and your child.

for my child the main problem is carelessness:

eg she wrote 1533+234 as the number sentence but when she did the static addition working, she wrote 1533-234.

or her working’s answer is 80004 but in the final answer blank she wrote 8004
