Jason and Kevin were given some money each. If Jason and Kevin spent $100 and $50 each day respectively. Jason would have $1300 when Kevin had spend all his money. if Jason and Kevin spent $50 and $100 each day respectively, Jason would have $3700 when Kevin had spent all his money.
how much money was given to Jason at the beginning ?

Kevin spent all his money thus we can make Kevin's ratios the same in both cases.

Case 1, Jason left 1300
Jason : Kevin
2 : 1
4 : 2

Case 2, Jason left 3700
Jason : Kevin
1 : 2

3u ----- 3700 - 1300
3u = 2400
1u = 800

Jason was given 4u + 1300 (case 1)
4u + 1300 ----- 4 x $800 + $1300 = $4500

Lisa : Lisa + Ming + Nora = 1: 5

Ming : Lisa + Nora = 1 : 9
Ming : Lisa + Ming + Nora : 1: 10

Lisa+Ming+Nora --> 10 units
Lisa+Ming+Nora : Lisa:Ming:Nora = 10 units : 2 units: 1unit : 7 units

Nora paid $60 more than Ming,
7units - 1 unit = $60
1 unit --> $10
10 units --> $100

Present cost $100

Case 1:
ratio of Lisa paid to Ming and Nora ----- 1 : 4 ( 10 : 40 )

Case 2:
ratio of Ming paid to Lisa and Nora ----- 1 : 9 ( 5 : 45 )

Total in both case must be the same so that we can do the comparison

From above:
Ratio of Lisa to Ming to Nore ------ 10u : 5u : 35u

Given that Nora paid $60 more than Ming

35u - 5u = 60
30u = 60
1u = 2

Cost of the present ----- 50u
50u ----- 50 x 2 = 100

Mary shook hands with 5 times as many girls as boys:
Girls : Boys --> 5u + 1 : 1u (*+1 to include Mary), total --> 6u + 1

John shook hands with 6 times as many girls as boys:
Girls : Boys --> 5u+1 : 1u-1 = 6 : 1

So, 5u + 1 = 6 x (1u-1)
1u --> 7

Number of girls : boys = 5 x 7 + 1 : 7 = 36 : 7
Number of people at the party = 36 + 7 = 43
36-7=29
There were 29 more girls than boys.

Since they used the same amount of coffee, the difference will remain the same..

At first,
Carol's coffee powder--> 4.9 kg
Amanda's coffee powder --> 5.3 kg
difference --> 0.4 kg

In the end, Amanda:Carol --> 2u : 1u
1u --> 0.4 kg
Amanda --> 0.8 kg
Carol --> 0.4 kg

Amount used by each = 5.3 kg - 0.8 kg = 4.9 kg - 0.4 kg = 4.5 kg

For ALL such Double-Ratios questions, you may use the Advanced Model Method (or Bags and Boxes Method).

Carol bought 4.9kg of coffee powder.
Amanda bought 4.9kg + 400g = 5.3kg of coffee powder.

Let Carol put her coffee powder in 1 Bag and 1 Box.
Let Amanda put her coffee powder in 1 Bag and 2 Boxes.

(For those used to the normal Bar Model Method, think of, or imagine, a Box as a Rectangle, and a Bag as a Circle)

Amanda → 5.3kg → 1 Bag and 2 Boxes
Carol → 4.9kg → 1 Bag and 1 Box

(Both of them use the same amount of coffee powder)
Both of them use 1 Bag of coffee powder each

(Amanda has twice as much coffee powder as Carol)
Carol had 1 Box of coffee powder left.
Amanda had 2 Boxes of coffee powder left.

Amanda → 5.3kg → 1 Bag and 2 Boxes
Carol → 4.9kg → 1 Bag and 1 Box

5.3kg → 1 Bag and 2 Boxes\t(Row 1)
4.9kg → 1 Bag and 1 Box\t(Row 2)

(Row 1 – Row 2)

0.4kg → 0 Bag and 1 Box
0.4kg → 1 Box

4.9kg → 1 Bag and 1 Box\t(Row 2)
