Do we need to send our darlings to hanyu pinyin preparatory class before p1?

Won't the primary school be teaching our kids. Why are so many parents doing that?

      Hi Kelsy,
I was asking the same question a few months ago. Espeically with the fact that my DS kindergarden is not teaching them any as they says that the teacher in P1 will be teaching.
But when i further check with friends with kids in P1, they are says the teacher do teach but not in details as most of the kids already learn before...

Thus for your question: Yes the teacher in P1 will teach but if the more than half of the students in her class already know/learn HYPY... i do not think she will be teaching in depth, she will just revise...

So I will be also sending DS to learn HYPY due this this situation...

      Hope this helps..., :please:

My ds1 kindergarten says they will be teaching. So I don't really want to send him. But I realise that the school he's going to had hanyu pinyin spelling in the 1st term.
Wonder if it's too late to look for class in nov if during the p1 orientation shcool has we have to go. :?

        Good morning Crystalbelle,

What is your DS weight? Mine is about 110cm tall and weighs about 19 to 20Kg.
I think its ok if he's a little bit overweight cos kids sure lose weight when they enters P1 !

My DS is 111 and weights : 23-24 kg lor :yikes: πŸ˜“

Mine's worse. πŸ˜“ His weight is 32kg. Since baby, he's always above the 90% for the weight.
His problem is he's always 'hungry'. He will look for food himself. Now , I have refrained from buying any snacks.

I guess the bread and nutella is a killer for food lover. In order to eat the chocolate, he will eat half a loaf of bread.

Hopefully, when he goes to p1, he will lose weight due to the long hours.

            Crystalbelle :

Same problem.... Mine only eat broccoli.
Sadly, in preschool, they always have bd packs from friends. No matter how you keep sweets/snacks from them, they still get it from somewhere.
Worst is he gets sweets, chocolate from others when I go to supermarkets, other places. Haiz.

will you be sending your kids to those P1 preparatory enrichment/classes? what do they do there?

no haha...cos this is second kid already.
              first kid very gancheong.
went round looking for math enrichment.
now ds2's math i teach, english i teach, chinese outsource.
next year intend to start him on english enrichment.

have you taught your kid money concept and time concept?
i am still struggling with ds2 on this. lol. with ds1, is my ILaws taught de. lol!

              Hi jedamum

Same here. During my DS1 time, I sent him to quite a few enrichment classes before P1. Now with DS2, I teach him Math and English, he attends Berries for Chinese cos I din dare to teach Hanyu pinyin, scare teach the wrong sound/method then later difficult to turn around. Somehow, now that coming to mid year, was wondering whether teach him enough to prep him for P1......sigh.

Still teaching him on time and money...

I used to teach my DS1 on time and money using the EPH publication - Learn about Money and Learn about Time. However that was a few years’ back. Now that I am teaching DS2 on these topics, I can’t find them in Popular anymore. Seems that they don’t carry any more stock on these titles.

What activity / assessment books do you use to teach on time and money ?

his height is 97th percentile though.
he weighs 21kg. height 121. looks like a P1. but he is not even 6yrs old! :faint:

i still :scratchhead: as to how to teach time. he knows half past and o'clock, but not anything inbetween.
                    for money, i am teaching him $1=how many 10cents; 20cents; 50cents only. πŸ˜“
