Do a google search on \"verbs of perception\".

Hi I need an explanation of the following remarks in my DS 's comprehension:
Q. What disturbed Ali from his sleep?
DS's Ans: Ali was disturbed by the cry of a baby.
Reference Ans: A crying baby disturbed Ali from his sleep.
DS 's answer was marked as half correct; and the comments from his teacher is that his answer had the wrong point of reference. Could you please help me understand what is wrong with DS's answer?
tia -
I think the problem is because of the word " cry"! The word " disturbed" shows that he should answer in past tense!
