If we look at how they went ahead with the workers’ dormitory in Serangoon despite widespread protest, this will certainly be a go ahead.

[quote]No to nursing home, say Bishan residents

Not in my neighbourhood, please. In the latest example of Singaporeans not wanting certain amenities in their estate, a group of Bishan residents are clamouring for a nursing home to be sited elsewhere.

The Ministry of Health plans to build a 260-bed nursing home on a 0.3ha site facing three blocks of flats in Bishan Street 13.

The Lions Home for the Elders will be six to eight storeys tall.

                      TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

The old folk will be groaning right into my home.
                      - Mr Bernard Lau, who lives in Block 182

At a dialogue held at Bishan Community Club on Sunday to discuss the issue, about 20 residents voiced their opposition. Some wanted the Government to scout for other sites while others lamented the loss of the site which is now used as a football field.

Even with the public’s disdainful reaction to such people in previous reports, things don’t seem to become better. Is it our social fabric that is thinning at such an alarming rate? But it seems contradictory that the ones that oppose it are the senior citizens themselves…

As one youngster who does not oppose put it so aptly…" It seems so strange that elderly people should object to building a nursing home that is meant to meet their needs."

A case of denial that they may end up there one day??
