Pignite, that’s a tough one.
For me, I emphasized the effort put into preparing for exams rather than the results. It is important to us that DD1 enjoys the learning process rather than be just focused on the marks. There are also factors that contribute to the marks e.g. tough questions which will inevitably pull down the marks. For languages, it is also harder to score 85+ cos of compo and oral. For SA1, I rewarded her for her efforts before the results were out. Fortunately the results were decent and so she could see the linkage between hard work and good results.
As you say, DS has put in a lot of effort this year although the marks are not ideal. By withholding his reward, he may feel that the goals are unattainable and hence not inclined to work any harder. But it could work the other way too. You probably know which way he is inclined to go since you know your child best.
Maybe a compromise i.e. play for a limited time only? And do revision during the June hols? Careless mistakes can often be reduced with practice esp Math. -

I read the book too, when DS1 was taking his PSLE last year.. A nice book to read with DS.. Informative with a light touch of humour.. Their situation was very similar to our family too (except that we have 2 DSs but the family has a DS and a younger DD).. Even the lizard in their house looked similar to ours, haha!
I have passed the book to my sister, whose DS is taking PSLE this year, and she & DS like the book too...

Basically this is a course where the sch will select the higher achiever students to attend. It is only for a term and we have to pay a small sum as it is conducted by teacher from outside.
Yes it is to train the students of more challenging sums.
My girl was selected for 2 continuous years in P3 (based on P2 final year results) and P4 (based on P3 final year results)
I am not sure about other sch, my girl’s sch selection is based on past year overall results. According to her, those that get 92 and above are selected irregardless of which class you are in. -
Has anyone 2002 kids start puberty? I think girls have it earlier.
very concern if my gal is too early for pubic hair…
does it mean she will have menses very soon? -

Think different schools practise differently. If I am not wrong,in my sons' school, the maths Olympiad class will be open to the whole P4 cohort, except that a fee is chargeable for those who want to enrol. But for the handful of already selected students, they will get to attend the class f.o.c.

at least it is an option for those who are willing to pay as i think sch vendor will charge cheaper than outside. -
Last year, maths olympiad was open to all the girls in 2 classes, and held during cirriculum time. One mummy from the other class complained that the maths olympiad teacher was very fierce and kept scolding the girls. My girl came home excitedly to show me "tricks" that she had learnt in the math olympiad class. She enjoyed the class and didn’t recall the teacher scolding in class. This year maths olympiad became an "enrichment class" held after classes, and something we have to pay for if we want our dd to go for, if they are invited for it.
Its just like the manga art "enrichment" the school held last year. During the P4 teacher-parents talk earlier this year, one parent stridently complained that her daugher was scolded and belittle by the external vendor (manga art teacher). While another parent was wispering in my ear that her daughter enjoyed the class and couldn’t wait for manga art again this year! LOL! -

Just collected my dd report book aggregate drop by 15 marks!
Three band 1 and one band 2 which is her math that pulls her down!This time aggregate 340/400
Didn’t scold nor nag at her just pass the report book to her and let her see it for herself! -
me too adjusting my expectation to match reality.... accepting the fact that as the level goes higher the tougher the paper is.... and most importantly the child's ability.... not all children are the same.... and no one can understand the child more than the parents themselves.... i already saying bye-bye to the honeymoon period of P1/2 where the marks were in the 90+ range ... :boogie: now learning is no fun at all unlike younger days in K1-P2... :gloomy: now marking is strict and expectation is high....
