              Hi Champion, 711mum,

My opinion is that P4 is a bit too early for Algebra. But should learn in P5, as Algebra is easier to understand and to use it to solve some of the Average problem sums. Proportion-and-cross-multiply is another one to learn in P5. Simultaneous as well. Oh man, P5 is a big step from P4 for maths.

              regards,
              Xiaohu.

:thankyou: for your suggestion; appreciates much.

In fact P4 Maths already makes me šŸ˜“ and I am totally not a Maths (nor other subjects šŸ˜‚ ) person. I have \"outsource\" Maths to tuition centre and can only \"see-look\" at problem sums but unable to help DD1 much :siam: ...

:hi5: A lot of friends / parents here have highlighted that P5 is a big jump from P4 so I am also :lightrod: šŸ˜“ :nailbite:

                  Hi Xiao Hu,

I am in no better position than dear Sista Champion, A FTWM relying on tuition centre to \"impart\" problem solving skills to DD. You could be right in that Algebra is better comprehend at P5 that Kids at P4 have yet to be taught. If P5 Maths is one big and demanding leap from P4, all the more we should prepare our kids ahead to meet the challenge and is only a question of time.

Another considerable hurdle to cross prior to P6 :imdrowning:

My DS teacher greatly discourages students to apply Algebra in replace of model concept, stating that students who do not fully grasp this topic will tend to make careless mistakes. Dun know why she said so, cos Algebra is one of my fav areas . Anyway, if u intend to start yr kid earlier for this, may want to ensure he/she fully understands it .

we did a few rounds of algebra after my husband attended cimman's workshop.
true enough, as he could not grasp the rationale behind it fully, my boy made some mistakes while trying out algebra method to solve some common problems (which are also solvable by model); the mistakes are the transfer from left to right (where positive becomes negative etc) and also the '++=+, +-=-' kind of stuff where he is not familiar yet.
so far he is ok with model (better than me since my model knowledge is only sufficient for P1 šŸ˜“) as it helps him to visualise. but i have seen some of the models drawn under the P4 thread which we find it difficult to understand. then my husband will use algebra instead to show my son (if my son does not know how to do), then in such case son finds it easier to understand x,y method than model.
so it depends on the question type....for now.
