At least your ds made 2 trips. Mine was supposed to visit two shops in one day. Long overdue to get a 4/4. At the first shop, he was already a sour-face when asked to test. Picked up 2 and lightly produced a few scratchy sounds. Ignored the 3rd one. Told him we’ll just get him the $100 china-made ones since he had no opinion and he said fine! Good grief! And just 4 hours earlier, he said he did not want china-made ones!

Well, yeah, mine was really happy to pick up the case and leave the shop after we paid for it.

Er, no lah. 1st time went to synwin, not totally satisfied with the sound quality of the violins he tried. Not to expectation at all. Then thought of trying some vintage violins either at Tanglewood. And Tong MingXi nearby. But in the end, then 2nd trip we went to Music Essentials and settled with that lah. Afterall, now his main instrument is viola and not violin. His teacher only gave the go-ahead to buy full-size beginning of this year. *hehe* and my son is older than yours.

Sigh… I would be quite happy if my ds can say he is not happy with any of the instruments. Instead, just because he didn’t like to shop and test, he simply said anything is better than his 3/4! So a 4/4 is already an improvement to him!!! Really wanted to strangle him in the shop. Since he settled for one in the end, didn’t want to make him go to another shop because I know that he would grumble and I would hear no end of it!

I also have ears wat. For the price of what we tried, the quality was not what we expected. So well, after going to Synwin - for us, the \"search was not over\". haha.

My ds is spoilt in the sense that he's never had to shop for a violin before. So far, all were bought for him. His 3/4 and his viola - the shopping was done by his teacher who personally shopped and selected. We just went to pay. The viola the teacher paid first instead bc I found out got more discount if he bought. hah ... so troubled him to go instead. LOL.

I have 2 full size and a 3/4 size student violin for sale. Previously used by my dd, thinking of clearing as I have 5 full size sitting at home. Let me know if interested.

Mine also picked a violin for the first time. Never had to bother with choosing one. Anyway, he said his 3/4 was horrid (but better than the school's!), so any better 4/4, even if slightly, is absolutely fine with him. What can I say?! 🤷

Afraid not! But I think he prefers those low, mellow sounds, not those bright ones, since that was what he picked in the end. He rejected the 2 brighter ones. Maybe that's him cos he's not the chirpy type! Always moody and grouchy!

Strings does play apart in the sound difference as well.

Is there any place where i can get the price of a string instructment assess? Thinking of swapping a viola for violin. But i don’t know who would give me a fair deal.
